Russian cleric calls for gays to be thrashed, and other world news

talgat · Russia: Talgat Tadjuddin, pictured, Russia's senior Muslim cleric, called on Muslims and Orthodox Christians to "thrash" homosexuals yesterday if the gay pride parade that is scheduled to take place in Moscow this May takes place. "This should in no case be allowed, but if they still take it to the streets, then one will have nothing to do but thrash them," he said.

· Botswana: The Voice newspaper earlier this month published an advertorial on gay life, breaking a long standing journalistic taboo against positive representations of gays and lesbians in the country. The advertorial was sponsored by LEGABIBO (Lesbians,Gays and Bisexuals of Botswana).

· United Arab Emirates: An United Arab Emirates court sentenced each of 26 men to five years in prison for participating in a gay wedding. They were "busted in a hotel 'dressed in women's clothes and make-up in preparation," the Emirates Today newspaper reported." The November arrests took place when police raided the hotel. You may recall that a cop who took photos was arrested.

Delegate Mark Cole is in an idiot, and other political snafus

mark cole In the Virginia General Assembly, which previously passed the most restrictive gay marriage ban in the country, Senate Bill 700 would make permanent discrimination safeguards for gays and lesbians in state employment and extend them to local governments and school boards. Enter Delegate Mark Cole, total idiot, who explained, "Sexual orientation is a broad term. There are eight different sexual orientations, including pedophilia and bestiality. I think we'd be opening up Pandora's box and allowing judges to interpret what that means." Meanwhile Senator Brownback now says that he meant no offense to "homosexuals" when he used the word "fruits" in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine. How exactly did he mean it then?

Bravo milks Project Runway for an extra week

project runway The second season of Project Runway has turned out to be such a cash cow for Bravo that they've decided to milk it for an extra week. The show, hosted by Heidi Klum, now will include a special reunion episode on Wednesday, February 22 at 10pm - and the season finale is being extended to two hours airing over two weeks. They're elated, I'm annoyed. Watch as Bravo President Lauren Zalaznick tries to pass the move off as community service:

PlanetOut Inc. and NBC head into the Outzone

planet out inc. PlanetOut Inc., the rather scary gay media superpower that has been buying up everything, now has it's sights set on gobbling up another market. Partnering up with the NBC owned Bravo cable network, they will soon be launching OutzoneTV.com, a broadband site targeting our community. Sure, of course we can expect to see reruns of "Boy Meets Boy" and the Queer Eyes online - but with PlanetOut Inc. behind it, the ongoing media conglomeration takeover isn't a matter to be taken lightly.

Welcome to the Neighborhood's gay Wrights battle

wrights Remember the whole Welcome To The Neighborhood reality television show debacle? Yeah, I went off about it in a pretty significant way at the time, only to learn all these months later that Stephen and John Wright and their adopted son Eli were the winners on the cancelled series. If I'd have known that I'd have, well, nevermind. Any show where a straight, white, religious family gets to decide the fate of heavily stereotyped minorities is just a little too real world if you ask me. It does, however, turn out that ABC may have had a motive in their cancellation - allowing the Walt Disney Company to pre-empt a show that could have interfered with a much bigger enterprise: the courting of evangelical Christian audiences for "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." Was the show cancelled because the gays actually won? (Thanks Tyler)

Gene Shalit apologizes for his Brokeback Mountain review

shalit Remember Today show movie critic Gene Shalit's Brokeback Mountain Review? After an outpouring of emails and phone calls he's issued an apology. "In describing the behavior of 'Jack' I used words ('sexual predator') that I now discover have angered, agitated, and hurt many people. I did not intend to use a word that many in the gay community consider incendiary. . . I certainly had no intention of casting aspersions on anyone in the gay community or on the community itself. I regret any emotional hurt that may have resulted from my review of 'Brokeback Mountain.'"

ABC's Extreme right Makeover delivers Dobson dogma

ty pennington of extreme makeover: home edition The wingnuts over at Focus On (someone else's) Family were invited by ABC to help out with this weekend's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." Their press release notes, "Both the show’s producers and sponsor Keller Homes invited Focus to contribute after learning the unique background of the episode’s beneficiary, a local family of eight. Focus will provide a complete family library of video, audio, and print classics for this homeschooling family." Just think - a whole library of homophobic propaganda! As if directing hurricane victims last week to fake their reactions to Laura Bush wasn't bad enough. ABC and Extreme Makeover need to be slapped. (Thanks Good As You)

Daniel Fetty's brutal murder results in plea agreement

fetty The brutal murder of Daniel Fetty in Ohio is a story that has broken my heart twice - once simply due to his death, twice because the mainstream and gay press have virtually ignored the horrific crime. Three men beat Fetty with bricks, boards and bottles, stripped him naked and threw his body in a dumpster last October. Juanita Meek, Fetty's mother, said in court to Martin Baxter, one of the accused, "You put out his both his eyes, broke his nose, knocked out his teeth, broke his Adam's apple, broke his neck, broke all but one of his ribs and punctured his heart and lungs."

As a result H&M, who were using Moss as the face of their upcoming campaign, is reconsidering its decision to stand by the London model, noting that their models be "healthy, wholesome and sound." Antony Hegarty shocked to win the Mercury Prize

antony hegarty Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons was surprised to win this year's Mercury Prize, despite all the critical acclaim being heaped on his second album, I Am A Bird Now. "I was really shocked. I just thought I was going to be like a nice sorbet: my role was to be a counterpoint to the main course, which was a role I'm comfortable with. I've never been the main course before," he said. The media aren't so sure what to make of it either. There is talk of "anger" and "bafflement" at Hegarty capturing the £20,000 award.

Logo has everything but the homophobia

ant.jpg The most striking difference between Logo and other networks, writes a NY Times reviewer, is what the gay channel doesn't have: straight men acting out their subliminal fear of gayness. Those kinds of jokes are rampant elsewhere: Whether it's a "Saturday Night Live" skit, the guys needling each other on "Entourage" or a sendup of homophobic hysteria on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," young men on television now make the same kinds of gay jokes.

Mexican campaign to end homophobia first in the country

fox The Mexican government has launched its first ever anti-homophobia campaign as a means to encourage HIV testing. In one radio ad, a mother preparing dinner for her son and his date, whom he is bringing home for the first time, says, "You look so in love, my son. So what's your date's name?" Her son says, "Oscar." The narrator then conveys that equality begins with accepting people's differences. The campaign is currently airing in 19 cities and is set to go nationwide this month. The hope is that destigmatizing being gay will enable more people to come forward and get help. The commercials stem from a 2001 constitutional amendment signed by President Vicente Fox, pictured, that outlawed discrimination based on sexuality. In 2003, federal agencies were required to fund tolerance campaigns.

So they ask if he'd say "nigga" on a record. Eminem responds, "Nah, I don't use that. That word is not even in my vocabulary. And that's just out of the respect that I do black music. I don't think that you can put race alongside gender, a man preferring a man. A gay person can be of any race, you know what I'm saying? Those are two completely different things."
