Chi Chi Larue leaves Vivid over policy change to condom optional

chi chi larue Our favorite drag queen porn director Chi Chi LaRue has stopped directing straight productions for Vivid because they've changed their condom-only policy. "As a person who has been very vocal about condom usage in every aspect of the gay business as well as the straight, and as a person who went to work for Vivid because of their mandatory condom policy, I had to stop directing for them once it became condom-optional." Larue said, adding, "It's my policy to use condoms and it would be very hypocritical of me after how vocal I've been in this industry in the gay and straight sides to continue to do movies and not use condoms. Vivid's Howard Levine said, "My hat is off to Chi Chi for his commitment to his beliefs and I wish him the best, but I do wish he would return the dress he borrowed from me for the AVN Awards." PlanetOut Inc. and NBC head into the Outzone

planet out inc. PlanetOut Inc., the rather scary gay media superpower that has been buying up everything, now has it's sights set on gobbling up another market. Partnering up with the NBC owned Bravo cable network, they will soon be launching OutzoneTV.com, a broadband site targeting our community. Sure, of course we can expect to see reruns of "Boy Meets Boy" and the Queer Eyes online - but with PlanetOut Inc. behind it, the ongoing media conglomeration takeover isn't a matter to be taken lightly.

Welcome to the Neighborhood's gay Wrights battle

wrights Remember the whole Welcome To The Neighborhood reality television show debacle? Yeah, I went off about it in a pretty significant way at the time, only to learn all these months later that Stephen and John Wright and their adopted son Eli were the winners on the cancelled series. If I'd have known that I'd have, well, nevermind. Any show where a straight, white, religious family gets to decide the fate of heavily stereotyped minorities is just a little too real world if you ask me. It does, however, turn out that ABC may have had a motive in their cancellation - allowing the Walt Disney Company to pre-empt a show that could have interfered with a much bigger enterprise: the courting of evangelical Christian audiences for "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." Was the show cancelled because the gays actually won? (Thanks Tyler)

ABC's Extreme right Makeover delivers Dobson dogma

ty pennington of extreme makeover: home edition The wingnuts over at Focus On (someone else's) Family were invited by ABC to help out with this weekend's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." Their press release notes, "Both the show’s producers and sponsor Keller Homes invited Focus to contribute after learning the unique background of the episode’s beneficiary, a local family of eight. Focus will provide a complete family library of video, audio, and print classics for this homeschooling family." Just think - a whole library of homophobic propaganda! As if directing hurricane victims last week to fake their reactions to Laura Bush wasn't bad enough. ABC and Extreme Makeover need to be slapped. (Thanks Good As You)

Ruling gives Michigan same-sex couples benefits

draganchuk An Ingham County judge has ruled that Michigan's ban against gay marriage does not prevent public employers from providing health insurance to partners of gay employees. Judge Joyce Draganchuk said health care benefits are benefits of employment, not marriage. "Today's ruling affirms what we've believed all along - Michigan voters never intended to take health insurance away from families," said ACLU attorney Deborah LaBelle

When Sarah and Maz, who've been together since college, asked to speak to the bar's promoter Jeremy Joseph, pictured, they were told he was in a meeting. Sarah says, “what’s the point of the community having fought for forty years for the rights of gay women and men if a gay club won’t let you in if you do not fit to their own stereotype of a gay woman?”

Elton John tops Neiman Marcus Christmas list

elton john While I don't typically think of Elton John topping very many things, he is at the top of the Neiman Marcus' 79th annual Christmas Book catalogue, at least in terms of price. That's right, if you're looking for that extra special gift for that extra special someone, consider a 90-minute private concert by Sir Elton for a mere $1.5 million - proceeds going to the Elton John AIDS Foundation. You can bring along 500 guests if that helps sway your decision.

Logo has everything but the homophobia

ant.jpg The most striking difference between Logo and other networks, writes a NY Times reviewer, is what the gay channel doesn't have: straight men acting out their subliminal fear of gayness. Those kinds of jokes are rampant elsewhere: Whether it's a "Saturday Night Live" skit, the guys needling each other on "Entourage" or a sendup of homophobic hysteria on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," young men on television now make the same kinds of gay jokes.

Clear Channel's homophobia continues with billboard removal

come together Even though the Gay.com advertising campaign continues to offend us, something that offends us even more is the giant corporate evil that is Clear Channel. They're taking down one of the Come Together billboard ads today in Cambridge, Massachusetts, after receiving a measly five complaints. Brian Graden's Logo delivers gay TV this week

graden The Logo gay television network is finally arriving on Thursday, June 30th, and the gay man who is molding it, Brian Graden, grew up in rural Illinois and attended Oral Roberts University. If it weren't for his proven programming track record with MTV, VH1 and CMT, we'd be afraid, very afraid. He assisted in developing "South Park" and delivered the four-letter-word family "The Osbournes" to American living rooms. He's been an envelope pusher - and within a gay network context I think we're going to see more. Logo, too, which will initially be seen in about 10 million homes with digital cable, is a given, whereas the Here! and Q networks are offering pay networks. (Thanks Carl)

Saturn Cafe's gender neutral restrooms rock

saturn cafe Let's visit the restroom at the Saturn Cafe in Santa Cruz, California. A decision must be made. Door No. 1 has a huge photograph of Elvis -- wait, that's an Elvis impersonator, possibly male, possibly female. Door No. 2 features a photo of two women -- wait, is that two men in drag? So, which door to enter? Either, say employees of the Saturn Cafe. And while unisex bathrooms are becoming mainstream, the idea normally is one sex at a time. At the Saturn Cafe, owners have taken the concept of gender neutrality very seriously. The idea at the Saturn is, any and all sexes at any time.

Gay employee Rob McGinty fired from Alaska Airlines

mcginty Don't you hate it when you split up with your partner, who is on your health plan, and he tells the company you've been lying. That's Rob McGinty's story in a nutshell. McGinty spent more than two decades in the airline industry until Alaska Airlines investigator Don Pilker dropped a bomb. McGinty, he believed, had fraudulently claimed health benefits for his longtime partner. McGinty was livid - "I'm absolutely outraged that you would take the word of a psychologically unbalanced alcoholic over that of a 22-year veteran with not one blemish on my record." They did. McGinty was fired. The story also helps illustrate how corporate benefit policies often have tougher eligibility standards for domestic partners than for married people. It's not equal. If McGinty had been married, he'd still have a job. His union wants him reinstated.

Microsoft has since said they'll support such legislation in the future.

Gender bender chemicals blamed for feminizing baby boys

Phthalates "Gender-bending" chemicals that mimick the female hormone oestrogen are being found to be responsible for the feminization of baby boys. Phthalates, which make plastics more pliable, are found in many cosmetics, toys, baby-feeding bottles and paints and can leak into water and food. Studies are showing they blunt the influence of testosterone. Interesting, as are the reactions. "This research highlights the need for tougher controls of gender-bending chemicals," says WWF UK toxic advisor Gwynne Lyons, otherwise "wildlife and baby boys will be the losers." Ain't it strange when your queer sensibilities wind up battling with your environmentalism? Here's a related story.

Exxon Mobil votes against protecting gays - again

exxon On a day when oil prices jumped again for a company that made a $25 billion profit last year, Exxon Mobil Chief Executive Lee Raymond said, "One of our key strengths is to see past the short-term market noise and focus on the long-term challenges and trends." Apparently that includes ignoring the trend of having employment policies explicitly barring discrimination against gays. Exxon Mobil, the only Fortune 100 oil company not to have such a policy, actually repealed the one they did have three years ago, making them the only American company to take such protections away. Shareholders voted against such a policy again today and the company recommended that they do so. Needless to say there won't be any tigers in my tank. They also own Esso as well as On The Run convenience stores.
