Now that I'm gainfully unemployed I can do these sort of things, like skip town on a moment's notice, for example. Now I'm back for a couple days before I head down to Los Angeles (a photoshoot for Hoop: The Movie) and then I'm off to Miami to warm up with some friends. Once my great American vacation is over and the dust settles Queer Day will be back with a vengeance, or maybe I'll just stick a fork in it, or maybe we'll turn it into a group experience. Want to be a part of a big love community project? Let me know. As for what will happen, I guess we'll all have to wait and see. I'm more or less out of town until later this month. In the meantime you're beautiful, I love you and hope you're having the happiest queer day possible.

&middot: #3: Hey Philo! Glad I found the site....Thank you for the time and effort you put into it - a refreshing blend of serious news with items that give me the giggles! I thought it was great that you put the spotlight on Coretta Scott King at the time of her passing - truly a woman who deserves to be honored by the Gay community.

Now that she's gone, I have real concerns about how the daughter and niece are going to twist the King legacy to suit their own homophobic agendas. I don't think it's racist to note that many of the King's supporters came from the Black, Southern Baptist Church - millions of them in fact. This
organization is NOT known for it's acceptance and tolerance of Gay folk.....

Frightening as it is to think of it, a large percentage of the King's followers are ripe for the picking and the aforementioned relatives are going to make the most of this opportunity to recruit millions of people to their homophobic way of thinking. That's just not going to help us at ALL! They may not
LIKE us now, but with a Fire and Brimstone preacher named King leading them they'll surely HATE us within a very few short years.

And then they'll go to the voting booths.....

What can we do? I know you're not a political leader or anything, but you DO have a voice that is being heard. Can you work to shine a light on the doings of these two prejudiced women, both past and present, thus helping to get our community worked up to the point where we are willing to fight to preserve the King legacy of equality for all?

Listen Honey, you are NOT the only one I'm laying this heavy ass trip on. I know I've got to do my part - Strangely, Oprah has yet to respond...... So as a journalist, and a damn fine one, I hope you'll look into this and do what you can.

Thanks again,

J. Clerkin-Whitcomb

Philo responds: I hear you loud and clear. Given the mountain of information for Queer Day to cover I regularly draw the line at stories that have a clear LGBT specific angle to them. I'll be keeping my eye out for them, and the rest of you - do keep an eye on the legacy.

President Bush signed legislation giving $500 million to faith-based programs to promote and strengthen opposite-sex marriage, a provision that's part of the deficit reduction bill passed by Congress. How this reduced the deficit is anybody's guess. Bush himself noted, “It allows faith-based groups that provide social services to receive federal funding without changing the way they hire,” Bush noted at the White House signing ceremony. Translation: We're giving money to groups that specifically discriminate in their hiring process. Assistant Health and Human Services Secretary Wade Horn said that the financial windfall is not intended to specifically oppose same-sex marriage, although the President is a major supporter of a proposed amendment to ban gay marriage in the Constitution. Like I said yesterday, Bill Frist is bringing it in June. Yep, it's happening all over again.

The court will not be meeting its 130-day self-imposed deadline for ruling on a challenge to the 1913 law that prevents clerks from issuing marriage licenses to people from states where that marriage would be illegal. You probably recall, but in case you don't, the nearly hundred-year-old law, previously ignored for decades, was written when most states did not recognize interracial marriage. After the US Supreme Court ruled that laws barring interracial couples from marrying was illegal the Massachusetts statute fell into disuse.
