Freedom To Marry: Same-sex couples stand for marriage rights

same sex marriage san francisco · California: And the debate over whether San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's actions helped or hurt the cause, a debate I personally find to be a ridiculous in that it's expertly designed to distract from the real issue. While busy defending whether he did the right thing, one is typically not debating the real issue at all. Making the Valentine's Day activism in Napa, rural Nevada County, Humboldt and Placer Counties, San Diego and all over the state all the more vital (all five links have photos). I particularly applaud Terry McClaren who stood for hours silently on the steps of San Mateo County's Government Center yesterday wearing her wedding dress.

· UK: A new Journal of Epidemiology and Community Heath report in the UK has revealed that same-sex marriage and civil partnerships are good for our health. The report says they reduce the prejudice and social exclusion that same-sex couples feel and should help to cut the high rates of depression and drug-taking, promiscuity and sexually transmitted diseases - a suspect list in my book, yet very similar ones are used by the wingnuts as cause to deny such partnerships. Interesting, eh?

· New Jersey: New Jersey could become the second state in the US to legalize gay marriage in a case presented to the State Supreme Court today. "New Jersey is a unique state nationally when it comes to this issue," said Lambda Legal lawyer David Buckel. "That became very clear with a governor's race in which candidates on both sides opposed an amendment to the state constitution that would limit marriage to a man and a woman." I have to say I'm eagerly anticipating the verdict.

Queers on campus

lydon state gsa · Ontario The University of Western Ontario's new Pride Library computers have a unique search engine that accommodates "queer lingo" - just one of the features of Canada's first library devoted to the academic study of "diversexuality." It opens today.

· Connecticut/Massachusetts: While we're still wondering if 25 percent of Yale students are gay (seems unlikely?), Harvard's Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian, Transgender, and Supporters Alliance (BGLTSA) kicks off its second-annual “Bisexuality Weeks” program addressing the marginalization of bisexuals within the larger queer community.

· California: While California State University, East Bay, kicks off its first weeklong Queerfest today, University of California Riverside's Graduate Student Research Conference is digging deeper into sexuality. Conference highlights include Whitman’s obsession with masturbation, Queer Asian perspectives in contemporary literature, masculinity in film noire and sexual deviance in society. Sounds like my kind of crowd.

· Hawaii: And sadly the high school years are still a nightmare/endurance test for teens like "Shane", a transgendered sophomore who says, "Being queer in high school here is really hard. It makes you scared, like you can't even walk down the hall without being thrown against a locker."

· Vermont: Photos from Lyndon State's Gay Straight Alliance.

Homophobe Grant Storms scolded for filing frivilous lawsuit

storms Action Wisconsin, the largest gay rights group in the state, has been awarded $87,000 in attorneys' fees by a judge who scolded Louisiana pastor Grant Storms (shown) and his lawyer for bringing a frivolous lawsuit claiming the group defamed him. Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Patricia McMahon said the lawsuit lacked merit from the day it was filed. Storms was one of several speakers at the "International Conference on Homo-Fascism" and Action Wisconsin obtained an audio recording of the conference and publicized remarks inciting violence and hatred. Storms said gay rights' opponents should "start taking it to the streets." He mimicked gun fire: "Boom, boom, boom, boom. There's twenty! Ca-ching." You probably remember when Southern Decadence had to get a restraining order against him too.

Action call for queers to oppose Alito nomination

alito The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is urging gays and lesbians to contact their U.S. senators to oppose Samuel Alito as a replacement for Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court. "The confirmation of Alito would put in mortal danger the constitutional and other legal rights and interests of LGBT people across the country," director Matt Foreman said. "If Alito serves on the Supreme Court, he will no longer be subject to any sort of review. He would team up with justices Scalia and Thomas to have their extremist views become the law of the land."

Ember Swift isn't selling out

ember swift Having just returned from British Columbia, it's only fitting that I tell you about Ember Swift, the band named after lead singer-songwriter Ember Swift. Arriving at Toronto University in 1995 she met bandmate Lyndell Montgomery, who would go on to become an integral part of her musical world. With Swift's involvement in various areas of activism (queer, environmental, vegan) she wasn't interested in settling either. "I am not the type to hang back and wait for approval or permission to do what I love, and so it was a logical move to establish an independent record company (Few'll Ignite Sound) and release albums on my own," she said. "Otherwise, I could still be waiting in a queue for someone to decide to invest in my art. In other words, relinquishing my political and personal integrity in order to gamble for fame just seemed ludicrous to me and still does."

California gay marriage activists stall Arnold's veto

schwarzenegger Activists and politicians upset by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's vow to veto the same-sex marriage bill that the state Legislature passed last week are actively delaying sending him the bill in a bid to change his mind. In fact, they don't plan to deliver it to him until the September 23 deadline and the bill must be physically in his possession before he can actually veto it. Meanwhile, gay rights groups are planning activities every day until then in an attempt to rally support for the measure. So far, according to Schwarzenegger's spokeswoman, he still plans to veto it - but it's not all over til the fat lady sings and Christopher Lisotta's column paints a more fuller, vivid portrait.

"Pyaar Hua Ikraar Hua Queer Hua To Kya Hua" screamed a multi-coloured banner as flashbulbs went off and the Indian protesters took a break. A visibly frightened 21-year-old, who shied away from the cameras, summed up the purpose of the march: "Once the law is amended, people like me can live in dignity." What law is that? Their website declares that they've "begun shipping pink-painted cattle excrement" to 20 lawmakers and Republican Senators Kim Brimer of Fort Worth, Jane Nelson of Lewisville and Chris Harris of Arlington are on their "send poo" mailing list. Amanda McMurrey, spokeswoman for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service in Fort Worth, notes that, "Excrement, regardless of origin, is mailable only under certain conditions." Apparently a coat of pink paint isn't enough. McMurrey says they could face fines and a stay in federal prison. (Thanks Dan-X)

Dusty Springfield's bisexual life becomes a musical

springfield Some of you may not be aware of Dusty Springfield's turbulent and envelope-pushing history. She was one of the first artists to refuse to play to segregated audiences in South Africa, and, in a particularly brave move for the times, she came out of the closet as bisexual in a 1970 interview. Springfield, who died of breast cancer of 1999, is the subject of a new Suzanne Fletcher musical, "A Girl Called Dusty," that has me thinking about taking a quick trip to P-Town to catch it. Maybe we'll all be lucky enough to see it tour following it's run there.

Conyers agreed to pay them $200,000 in the settlement. Chad Conyers strangled gay-rights activist Joseph Camber in a University of Tennessee parking lot in April 2002. There was evidence of sexual activity. The autopsy showed Camber was strangled with such force his larynx was broken and that he struggled with his attacker, as evidenced by the skin under his broken fingernails. A DNA test matched that skin to Conyers, but the DNA request warrant was for bodily fluid, not skin, so the DNA was dismissed.

While that already sounds ridiculous to us, Henry is currently the defendent in two human rights violation complaints related to a January letter in which he equated homosexuality with adultery and prostitution. "An evil act remains an evil act whether it is committed in public or in private," the fascist anti-homosexual Henry said.
