Melissa Sue Robinson gets back in the political ring

robinson Melissa Sue Robinson has announced her intention to run for the 23rd District State Senate Seat and she most certainly has Queer Day's support. Robinson's political future in Michigan will once again be tested, first in the primary election on February 21st. The transgender candidate has also filed a lawsuit over how she will be listed on the ballot. Robinson had her name legally changed in 1998, but under current state law, anyone who runs for office must use both names on ballots for the next ten years. Robinson's previously ran for office on more than one occasion and has been forced to deal with the same discriminatory law previously. (Thanks Autumn)

Vote Democrat Melissa Sue Robinson For

Michigan State Senate 23rd District in 2006

I Melissa Sue Robinson hereby announce on Thursday November 17th 2005 my candidacy for the Michigan State Senate in the 2006 Democratic "Special Election". My platform will focus on jobs creation, education, and healthcare. As Senator I would strongly push for fewer and more friendly regulation of our businesses, the elimination of the states single business tax, and cutting "red tape" for business owners. I will also push for tax cuts for small business. I strongly believe in protecting the rights of all citizens and am against the elimination of affirmitave action.

2006 Senate Bill 957 (Cut small business alternate SBT rate ) (House Roll Call 20)
Passed in the House (65 to 40) on January 24, 2006, to reduce from 2 percent to 1 percent the alternative Single Business Tax (SBT) tax rate charged to small businesses with receipts of less than $10 million, and which cap the owners' compensation. Also, to increase from $115,000 to $125,000 the maximum annual compensation a firm's proprietor or manager can earn without disqualifying the company from this lower tax rate. [History, Amendments & Comments]
I Melissa Sue Robinson candidate for the Michigan Senate's 23rd district totally supported Senate Bill 957 and when elected to the Senate I promise to work on legislation to greatly improve Michigan's business climate through tax cuts, deregulation, and elimination of red tape for business. I will support any right to work legislation that comes before the house for vote.
The following legislators opposed 2006 Senate Bill 957 (Cut small business alternate SBT rate ):
Accavitti (D) Adamini (D) Anderson (D) Bennett (D) Bieda (D) Brown (D)
Byrum (D) Cheeks (D) Clack (D) Clemente (D) Condino (D) Cushingberry (D)
Donigan (D) Farrah (D) Gillard (D) Gleason (D) Gonzales (D) Hood (D)
Hopgood (D) Kolb (D) Leland (D) Lemmons, III (D) Lemmons, Jr. (D) Lipsey (D)
Mayes (D) McConico (D) Meisner (D) Miller (D) Murphy (D) Plakas (D)
Polidori (D) Sak (D) Smith, Alma (D) Smith, Virgil (D) Tobocman (D) Vagnozzi (D)
Waters (D) Whitmer (D) Williams (D) Wojno (D)

Do you really want to continue to vote for a legislator such as Gretchen Whitmer that votes against business friendly legislation? It's time for a change. Give me a chance and I will help to create good paying jobs in Michigan.--------Melissa Sue Robinson

Melissa Sue Robinson - What She Stands For:

I, Melissa Sue Robinson want to inform the citizens of Michigan what the name "Melissa Sue Robinson" on the February primary and March general election ballot stands for.

When you hear and see my name or run into me in public the words"Civil and Human Rights" will stand out. Why? Because that is what I am all about. "Action" will also stand out as well. When elected I will agressivly pursue legislation designed to:

1. add growth to the Michigan economy and create jobs

2. Introduce a plans to not only keep the the state budget balanced , but also add a surplus.
When elected I will:

1. Introduce or agressivly pursue a plan to expand and help fund the arts in Michigan.
4. Aggresively pursue changes in anti- discrimination legislation in Michigan to the benefit of al citizens

5. Agressivly pursue business friendly legislation and the repeal of business unfriendly legislation and taxes such as the 1987 single business tax

6. Agressively pursue legislation that will insure money for higher education for all citizens that wish to pursue such a path, and will fight against any attempt to lower or eliminate such funding.

7. Agressivly fight for Michigan's environment and natural resources. I will fight against any attempt to pass environmentally damaging legislation.

8. I will agressivly pursue legislation that will improve the quality of life for all citizens of Ingham County, our Capital City, and the State of Michigan.

Best of all I :promise not to vote yes on any tax increases to the middle class and unfortunate members of society!

My opponent :"Gretchen Whitmer" voted against tax breaks for small business more than once. She says that higher education and jobs are important but like Gov. Granholm She has no concrete plan that will work!

I have a Plan and that's making Michigan's business climate No."1" in the nation. It's time for change. Let's get rid of the old and ring in the new.

Some have called me a longshot, but citizens remember this: LONGSHOTS HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO COME IN AND WHEN THEY DO GREATER DIVIDENDS ARE PAID FOR THOSE THAT TOOK A CHANCE.

FOLKS TAKE A CHANCE ON ME BY ELECTING ME AS YOUR SENATOR AND I PROMISE YOU THAT IT WILL PAY OFF IN GREAT REWARDS FOR YOU.

I promise that if elected, my whole term or terms in office will
be focused on "you" the voters and I will do everything to earn your trust
and salary as you State Senator in the 23rd District

. Please read the following two letters:

Why I want to be

Lansing's next

State Senator

Dear Citizens of Lansing, neighbors, and friends:

As candidate for the Michigan State Senate in the 2006 Democratic special election I would like to clarify my resolve to gain your vote for that esteemed office.

Having lived here most of my life, I know many of you through my remodeling and construction company. Others befriended me during my education at Pattengill, Eastern High, LCC, and Michigan State.

My company repaired and altered the appearance of many homes in Lansing. In so doing, many times the market value of the home was helped as well.

Owning that business, I became disciplined in management, successfully for ten years, overseeing up to twenty-five employees at a time.

My responsibilities included interviewing, hiring, and managing employees. Then came purchasing, payroll, general ledger, accounts payable and receivables. I also did the advertising, and sales. These duties require diligence, hard work, and an eye for detail. It is not a nine-to-five job, just as I am not a nine-to-five person. My business was not run by others, it depended on my insight, people skills, willingness to do whatever it took to get the job done, and a stubborn streak that made me forge ahead rather than quit.

We all know representing Michigan is a large responsibility with many problems, people, and politics. That does not faze me because I am a good judge of character and excel at designating or helping to designate things to the right person. Superior listening and communication skills, combined with perseverance and understanding are required to realistically help lead in any state.

There is need for positive change here to keep us from stagnation. The human condition is my passion, as my degrees in humanities from LCC and MSU can attest.

As your State Senator I want to help lead using past enlightenment and expertise, and give back to my community through public service.

My siblings and I learned about hard work at an early age. Our father left us in 1959. I was only nine then, but have been working every day since. My brothers and I worked in Lansing, shoveling walks, raking leaves, mowing lawns, and more to help mother put food on the table. We are a family of eight, and that's a lot of leaves.

As for my political qualifications, the majority of it was hands-on experience with clients through my business. There was a time when I helped elect a president as a precinct delegate for ward three, and another in 1997 when I ran for city council at large. In 2003 I ran for Mayor and the Lansing School Board, in 2004 State Representative in Michigan’s 68th District. I also helped in one of the Presidential campaigns in 2004 and am a presently Precinct Delegate in the First Ward in Lansing.

As your State Senator I would be present unless an act of God prevented it, to listen to issues you may have pertaining to our State and city. The voters needs are crucial for appropriate State and city government.

I also promise to you that I will remain in opposition to the Wolverine Pipeline and help fight against it..

If you want a Senator dedicated to you, the people, then I am that person. My desire is that you remember me in the upcomming special election when your State Senator is chosen.

Sincerely,

Melissa Sue Robinson

Dear Michigan Citizens,

When elected to the State Senate I will take a special interest in our state and insure that you are properly represented. Folks please don't let the idea that I am a person that changed my gender interfer with your choice at the polls in this special election. If anything
that fact will insure that I'll fight for your rights. I am qualified. See for yourself by considering the following:

I went back to school at age 41with only a GED. By age 43 I had an AA in Humanities from LCC with a 3.50GPA. I then went on to MSU where I attended four and five classes a semester. I
graduated with a BA in Interdiciplinary Humanities (English, History, andPsychology) at age 44 in 1994. My GPA was 3.0 only because I attended a class that brought it down. This happened because of my lack of interest in that classes subject matter. I started a successful business in 1987 closed it in 1991 in order to attend college and reopened it after college in 1995. This business stayed successful until I sold it to a crew forman 1n 1998 after changing genders. Because it was a construction business I felt that selling it was the proper thing to do. I then went on to a management position in plant protection at General Motors Plants two and three. I was
successful at that and only left after being offered a better position at SBC Communications.

At SBC I was successful in my position i.e. Maintainance Administrator. I held that position until Janurary 2004 when SBC closed the Lansing office. Because my goal is to help the Citizens of Lansing and the State of Michigan, moving with SBC to Southfield was not an option for me. I now own Design Masters Construction Inc. and the business is successful. Citizens of Michigan all that I am asking for is a chance to prove myself to you. I'll get that chance in 2006 if you hire "elect" me.
Thank You for reading my letter.

With Warm Regards,

Melissa Sue Robinson

Dear members of the media,
Attorney General "Mike Cox" is trying to not only throw out my lawsuit (against using a male and female name on the ballot), but also trying to get attorney fees and court costs assesed to me. They say I do not have a right to leave my "birth name " off the ballot, but my birth certificate says Melissa Sue Robinson on it (not Charles Staelens). They called me "He" all over their "Defendants Motion for Summary Disposition i.e. more than 5 times (when I'm legally a she), and claim that Senators are not employees of the state. They claim that I don't have permission to sue from the Michigan Dept. of Civil Rights, because I did not claim discrimination 300 days from the filing of my case or get permission to sue from them. MDCRs employee said that I only needed permission at the "Federal level", however I did claim that to no avail in another case and thought to pursue that with MDCR was useless. I request a press conference on this as soon as possible as the people need to know "Mike Cox" for the discriminatory person that he is. The state is represented by Cynthis A.. Acaro 517-373-6434. Thanks.

Press Release
For Imediate Release

Wednesday March 1st 2006

On Wed. March 1st 2006 I, Melissa Sue Robinson became an official candidate for State Representative in Michigan's 68th district by filing the necessary paperwork with the Ingham County Clerk's Lansing office and paying the $100.00 filing fee.

Ido not have to use dual names on the ballot ever again! It seems that I never had to. None of the County and City Clerks or State election officials ever alerted me that according to MCL168.560b of Michigan Election Laws if a candidate changes their name through divorce, they are not required to use their old name. This is exactly what I did. In the Ingham County Circuit Court Family Division (before Judge Lawrence Glazer) I changed my name on May 19, 1998 From Charles Edward Staelens Jr. to Melissa Sue Robinson. This was done through a divorce judgement (File No. 98-01916-DO).

Although the law works for me I will still be fighting for other Transgender People who wish to run for offfice as not every TS person changes their name through divorce or marriage. I am working on this through State Representative Michael Murphy's office.

Another thing is in the fact that because Judge Baird ruled that my lawsuit wasn't frivilous I didn't have to pay the attorney fees or court costs that the Michigan Attorney General was trying to get from me.

Elect Melissa Robinson
