Fred Savage plays gay character Mitch on Crumbs

Fred Savage (The Wonder Years) returned to television last night playing gay son Mitch on the new series Crumbs. The series will explore the family's varied reaction to his sexual orientation, but Savage says, "That's not what the show is about … the show is really about family and secrets that families keep from each other, and how a family pulls itself back together after keeping so much from each other for so long." Jane Curtin plays the mother who has just been discharged from a psychiatric facility, William Devane the father who is expecting a baby with his new girlfriend. The ABC sitcom airs Thursdays at 9:30 p.m. EST on ABC. (Thanks Tyler)

Great! This is just what the world needs...one more straight actor playing a gay man. What's up with these casting directors? They can't find gay actors in Hollywood? Every third waitor is a gay actor just dying to be discovered. Hiring straight actors to take these roles and "mimic" being gay is just as bad as putting someone in blackface or painting lines across his eyelids.

Personally, I don't care if Fred Savage is gay or straight. He fits well into the role. The show is funny, and hey! Bonus! Fred looks pretty good with his shirt off!

Truthfully, as far as actors go, I don't care about their sexuality. If a straight actor plays a gay role, or a gay actor plays a straight role, I just want them to be good in that role. That's what acting is about.

I loved Fred Savage on "The Wonder Years" and I'm so glad he's back on t.v. I think he's a great actor and he's great in this new role. I'm sure he'll eventually come out on the show and all will be well. But he's got one of the best expressive faces without using words and can convey such a range of emotions that until he comes out I will enjoy watching how he deals with his secret.
