Homophobic pastor Lonnie Latham arrested in gay hotel sting
The Reverend Lonnie Latham, an outspoken homophobic pastor, has been arrested after propositioning a male undercover police officer outside a hotel. As Latham, 59, left jail he told the media, "I was set up. I was in the area pastoring to police." Queer Day thinks otherwise. Latham was booked into Oklahoma County Jail after being arrested on a lewdness charge, allegedly asked the officer to join him in his hotel room for oral sex. Latham has supported a Southern Baptist Convention directive urging members to befriend gays and lesbians, then try to convince them to turn straight by rejecting their "sinful, destructive lifestyle."
Queer Day reader Dan-x also offers the following: "This guy was arrested in the parking lot of The Habana Inn, a notorious gay cruising hotel with a gay bar or two attached and within walking distance of a couple of other bars. My partner and I went there the first year or two we were together and I was really shocked that there was something as nasty as that scene going down in OKC. The web site implied it was a 'resort' hotel and we went for a mini-vacation weekend. I had talked to one of the clerks on my cell phone trying to find it once we got into town. Then when we checked in the same clerk was like, 'You've never been here? Well, let me tell you the 'rules'. Honey, these queers are looking for sex.' He then proceeded to tell me that leaving your curtains open meant you were looking and leaving your door open meant 'come on in.'"
He continues, "He had figured out from talking to me that we weren't looking to trick (hell, we brought our poodle and yorkie with us!) so he warned me to keep the curtains closed tight and if we wanted privacy to turn out the lights because he'd seen 'some of these queens climb up on the window units to get a peep-show over the top of the curtains.' It's sort of like a gay Motel 6. The rooms are all exterior entrance and the most desirable ones surround the pool. The guys just walk around and around or stand outside their rooms drinking and smoking, cruising and being cruised. Some guys would sit in their rooms with their curtains open in their underwear fondling themselves while watching porn on the tv and we saw a four-way in another room through the window because they left the curtains open and lights on. Yet this pastor was set-up. Uh-huh. Right." (Thanks Dan-x!)
