Time time time, see what's become of me

philo Hi People! Many of you probably don't know that Queer Day is not my day job, but strictly a free time avocation. For the past ten years I've been gainfully employed as Director of Education and Prevention for a non-profit AIDS service organization. Earlier this month I gave notice and on January 30th, my ten year anniversary to the day, I'll be celebrating not only a decade of memories, challenges and accomplishments, I'll also be celebrating new beginnings. While I don't know exactly what is next, I do know that I'm excited. Dismantling a major area of my life and passing on a decade's worth of work and information is, at times like the present, completely monopolozing my life. Soon this transition will be over and I will be a free man.

Clay Aiken gay cumrag story upsets John Paulus

aiken Last week I told you a story about a sleazebag opportunist named John who supposedly hooked up with Clay Aiken online and stole the poor boys cumrag, preserving it in a ziploc baggie for future testing. And then I get the following letter from a man named John Paulus: "I must take issue with you referring to me as a 'sleazebag opportunist'. You would be happily surprised to find that I am an extremely kind, honest, and giving person. Your description of me could more inaccurate. Perhaps if the only facts I had were those extracted from online articles, I might very well feel the same way."

Footballers Wives goes gay with Noah Alexander storyline

alexander On February 25, BBC America will premiere the third season of Footballers Wives and there's all sorts of drama to look forward to, including a gay storyline. Towards the end of the season, Noah Alexander, the first gay player on the Sparks team, is publicly outed when Tanya hires a male escort and captures him with the rental unit on a surveillance camera. Season Four, which premieres in April as BBC America does a rush job of bringing us up to date, Noah comes out, is beaten by a gang of thugs, prevented from working with children, and ultimately winds up at "The Church of the Found" looking for a cure for his sexuality. Where will it go after that? I don't know. I'm just giving you the heads up so that we can all be on board with all the twists and turns that are sure to come. Marcel McCalla, pictured, plays Alexander.

Virginia rejects restrictions for adoptive couples

Virginia: In a win for gay rights, a committee in the Virginia senate has narrowly killed legislation barring gay adoptive parents in other states from getting both of their names listed on birth certificates issued there. The education and health committee voted 8-7 to kill the measure.

Christine Quinn, the most powerful gay U.S. politician?

New York City: They're calling Christine Quinn the most powerful gay politican in the country. The first woman elected speaker of the New York City Council was elected by a vote of 50-0, with one abstention, but the battle for the job took place behind the scenes in the weeks prior with Quinn fending off at least six challengers.

Keith Cheung's death believed to be suicide

Georgia: The body of Ka Kee “Keith” Cheung, a gay Atlanta man who had been missing since January 3rd, has been found in the Chattahoochee River. Cheung’s sister Polly received a package from her brother that "contained his cell phone, keys and a suicide note telling us where to find his car. He said he was going to jump off the Chattahoochee bridge.”

White House Easter festivities to be gay family event

Washington DC: Three months before the annual Easter egg roll at the White House, the annual Easter event is actually getting interesting thanks to Family Pride Coalition organizers setting the stage for a mass turn out of gay and lesbian families. (Thanks Dan-X)

Welcome to the Neighborhood's gay Wrights battle

wrights Remember the whole Welcome To The Neighborhood reality television show debacle? Yeah, I went off about it in a pretty significant way at the time, only to learn all these months later that Stephen and John Wright and their adopted son Eli were the winners on the cancelled series. If I'd have known that I'd have, well, nevermind. Any show where a straight, white, religious family gets to decide the fate of heavily stereotyped minorities is just a little too real world if you ask me. It does, however, turn out that ABC may have had a motive in their cancellation - allowing the Walt Disney Company to pre-empt a show that could have interfered with a much bigger enterprise: the courting of evangelical Christian audiences for "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." Was the show cancelled because the gays actually won? (Thanks Tyler)

Laurel Hester gets her dying wish after all

hester Just last week I had the displeasure of telling you that the Ocean County freeholders didn't give Lt. Laurel Hester her dying wish. Well guess what kids, theychanged their minds. The decision came after a political teleconference among the Republican leaders of the county yesterday afternoon. But wait, there's more. Ocean County State Senator Andrew Ciesla has also asked the state Office of Legislative Services to prepare a bill he will sponsor that will eliminate the difference in the pension inheritance rights of members of the police and fire retirement system and other state public employee retirement systems.

Judge drops charges against Maestas's gay bashers on technicality

maestas I've been following the James Maestas gay bashing story in New Mexico rather closely and all was going rather well - until now. District Court Judge Michael Vigil has dismissed the charges against Johnny Valdez and Paul Montoya because prosecutors failed to notify them that they were targets 10 days before the grand jury that indicted them met, as legally required. On an "all is not lost" note, prosecutors are going to be able to present the evidence against the two defendants who didn't accept plea bargains again, only the judge wants to decide if probable cause exists to charge them. Prosecutors mailed them their notice on March 1 rather than serving them personally with the grand jury meeting set for March 10. (Thanks Vilma)

Mark Oaten resigns over rent boy claim

oaten Mark Oaten, the former Liberal Democrat leadership challenger, has resigned as his party's home affairs spokesman over an alleged affair with a rent boy. The UK politician released a statement apologizing for the "embarrassment" he has caused his family, friends and the Liberal Democrat party. Oaten, 41, the MP for Winchester, has dropped out of the Liberal Dem leadership race this week. News of the World managing editor Stuart Kuttner says the details of Oaten's relationship with a 23-year-old male prostitute have been confirmed. (Thanks Dan-X)

Gaywood Road residents want their street signs left alone

California: Homeowners in Alamo on a private drive named Gaywood Road want their expensive street signs to stop disappearing. They've been stolen four times so far. "At first, we made a joke out of it," said resident Linda Buschmeyer. "Then, it wasn't so funny." They like the name and have no plans to change it.

Melissa Sue Robinson gets back in the political ring

robinson Melissa Sue Robinson has announced her intention to run for the 23rd District State Senate Seat and she most certainly has Queer Day's support. Robinson's political future in Michigan will once again be tested, first in the primary election on February 21st. The transgender candidate has also filed a lawsuit over how she will be listed on the ballot. Robinson had her name legally changed in 1998, but under current state law, anyone who runs for office must use both names on ballots for the next ten years. Robinson's previously ran for office on more than one occasion and has been forced to deal with the same discriminatory law previously. (Thanks Autumn)

Baltimore judge rules Maryland gay marriage ban discriminatory

maryland's lead plaintiffs Circuit Court Judge M. Brooke Murdock in Baltimore ruled that Maryland's law banning same-sex marriage is discriminatory and "cannot withstand constitutional challenge," thus throwing open the possibility of a bruising legislative battle over a constitutional amendment. Will we be rushing to the altar in Maryland? Actually, no. Murdock immediately stayed her decision and the attorney general's office has voiced plans for an appeal. Lead plaintiffs in the lawsuit, Gita Deane, left, and Lisa Polyak, right, are savoring their victory nonetheless. The judge's decision thrilled the 19 gay men and lesbians who challenged a 1973 state statute defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman. (Thanks Tyler)

Lt. Laurel Hester's final plea rejected

hester In Toms River, New Jersey, Lt. Laurel Heste made her plea via videotape for Ocean County employees to be allowed to pass their pension benefits to domestic partners and the freeholders refused to even consider the matter, over the objections of many in the audience. Hester only has weeks left to live. "I've been diagnosed with several brain tumors, hence the loss of hair," Hester said. "In addition, it has spread elsewhere." She explained that she wanted to extend her pension benefits to her domestic partner, Stacie Andree, 30, a mechanic, so that she can afford to keep the house in Point Pleasant that they bought several years ago. "All I'm asking for is that you sign the resolution and that you make a change," Lieutenant Hester said.

Judge rules Wayne Healy verdict biased, overturns conviction

court A federal judge, Michael Ponsor (pictured), has ruled that Wayne Healy, a gay man who was convicted of the murder of his former brother-in-law Richard Chalue in 1980, should either be released from prison or given a new trial. Ponsor said prosecutors emphasized a (quote) "homosexual element to the murder," but suppressed evidence that there had been no sexual encounter. Healy was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Ponsor ruled that suppressing that information handicapped the defense "in an obviously devastating manner" and that doing so was "particularly grave." Ponsor's order said Healy is to be released on $400,000 bail, secured by his relatives' real estate, noting that Healy presents a very low risk of flight.

Clay Aiken's cumrag preserved by gay opportunist?

aiken It sounds rather insane, but one of gossip hound Billy Masters sources at the tabloids squealed that a man named John from North Carolina sold the paper a story about his steamy encounter with Clay Aiken. The story is apparently with the paper’s lawyers and is ready to go now that John's evidence has been tested and he passed a lie detector test. John and Aiken swapped photos, chatted online, and spoke on the phone - all of which John says he can be proven with supporting documentation - prior to them getting together at Aiken's hotel two weeks later where they supposedly had ninety minutes of unsafe sex in a variety of positions and some post-coital conversation. And yes, that's when the sleazebag opportunist saw fit to snag the washcloth Aiken used to clean up with and John kept it fresh in a zip-lock bag for DNA testing.

Bad Girls Season Two kicks off January 24

stewart and wade While the BBC show Bad Girls will soon begin it's eighth season over in the UK, we're finally set to begin Season Two of one of my absolute favorite guilty pleasures, courtesy of BBC America. Yes, I'm completely hooked on the happenings in Larkhall Prison's G-wing. With the second season premiere coming on January 24, we're once again nearing the end of the first season that has lipstick-lesbian-lifer Nikki Wade, pictured right, played by Mandana Jones, continuously upping the ante of sexual tension between her and Helen Stewart, pictured left, Larkhall's idealistic young warden (played by Simone Lahbib). Here's the first season episode guide for those of you just tuning in and still time to catch the scandalous season finale.

Sam Beaumont's real life Brokeback Mountain story

beaumont Sam Beaumont, pictured, settled down with Earl Meadows and tended 50 head of cattle for a quarter-century on an Oklahoma ranch. He says of his real life Brokeback Mountain story, "I was raised to be independent. I didn't really care what other people thought." In 1977, Beaumont was divorced and raising three sons after a dozen years in the Air Force when Meadows walked up to him near the Arkansas River. "He came up, we got to talkin' till 2 in the morning. I don't even remember what we said." But "I knew it was something special."

The Gayest Golden Globe Awards

brokeback "Call these the gay Globes," said TV Guide's Tom O'Neil before the show started and it turned out to be just that and then some. Liz Smith helped keep Rock Hudson's sexuality under wraps

rock hudson Lesbian gossip monger Liz Smith has revealed that Rock Hudson came to her about what he should do to avoid the destruction of his career when he was being blackmailed over his sexuality. It appears that the blackmailer was the former Mrs. Rock Hudson, Phyllis Gates, and lady Liz herself had "plenty in my files about the former Mrs. Hudson ... proving that Phyllis herself was not as 'clean as the driven slush.'" As a result Phyllis Gates did not extract money from her ex and Hudson was never exposed for being gay, until he died of AIDS that is. Does Liz think things have really changed? Not really. "Male homosexuality is still the great taboo, the career destroyer. ... It is still The Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name. The fear that kept Rock Hudson in the closet is still palpable in Hollywood."

Dupont Twins play gay cowboys in Factory Girl

dupont twins The Dupont Twins, shown here with Cornelia Guest, were best of friends with Andy Warhol, although Richard and Robert never starred in any of his movies. Well director George Hickenlooper is currently filming "Factory Girl" and he asked the boys to be in the movie. They play gay cowboys in a scene at Studio 54 with Guy Pearce who plays Warhol and Sienna Miller as Edie Sedgwick. Pearce is so good, Richard said, "We both got tears in our eyes."

Janice Dickinson hits the gay clubs

dickinson Janice Dickinson, the first supermodel who was booted as a judge from America's Next Top Model not long ago and recently gained noteriety fighting with Omarosa on VH1's "The Surreal Life" with the other has beens, threw a fit at the mostly straight restaurant Bella in Los Angeles when she wasn't given a front table. She left fuming and went where she would be treated better, Fubar for "Big Fat Dick Night" where a source told Page Six, "She was treated like royalty and danced her butt off." Later, Dickinson showed up at another gay bar as well, Heaven, where she partied all night.

Laura Prepon to play bisexual serial killer Karla Homolka

prepon That '70s Show star Laura Prepon, pictured, has the lead role in the controversial new film about the life of bisexual serial killer Karla Homolka. "Karla" was actually to have made its debut last August at the Montreal World Film Festival, but was yanked at the last minute following complaints. Christal Films has announced it will release "Karla" on 100 screens across Canada on January 20. Misha Collins costars as her husband, Paul Bernardo. Homolka and Bernardo were convicted of torturing and murdering two Canadian schoolgirls in the early 1990s. Homolka also drugged her own 15-year-old sister, Tammy, and allowed Bernardo to rape the girl, who choked on her own vomit and died. Homolka is currently living in seclusion.

Fred Savage plays gay character Mitch on Crumbs

Fred Savage (The Wonder Years) returned to television last night playing gay son Mitch on the new series Crumbs. The series will explore the family's varied reaction to his sexual orientation, but Savage says, "That's not what the show is about … the show is really about family and secrets that families keep from each other, and how a family pulls itself back together after keeping so much from each other for so long." Jane Curtin plays the mother who has just been discharged from a psychiatric facility, William Devane the father who is expecting a baby with his new girlfriend. The ABC sitcom airs Thursdays at 9:30 p.m. EST on ABC. (Thanks Tyler)

Scott Thompson's Buddy Cole is getting animated

cole One of my favorite Kids In The Hall sketches was the one where Buddy Cole, who bought the gay bar he was always hanging out in, found himself coaching his very own lesbian softball team - the Sappho Sluggers. Well the Here! gay television network is going to be bringing even more Buddy Cole to us - in an animated form. The new cartoon series for adults centering around Scott Thompson's character will apparently be running against a bullying "family values" city councilman. Can you imagine? Cole will also suddenly become a parent when his orphaned niece will show up on his doorstep.

John Waters hosting Til Death Do Us Part

waters John Waters will be Alfred Hitchcock-like hosting Court TV's first scripted series called "'Til Death Do Us Part." Waters notes, "It's a thin line these days, as you all know, between bad and good taste," and he's primarily out to entertain, presenting stories often too bizarre to concoct. The series takes real-life murder cases where one spouse kills the other and dramatizes the relationship, from the wedding to the murder to the investigation through to the trial. Waters time travels through the narrative as a character called the Groom Reaper. "When they first asked me, I thought they said the Groom Raper. Either way, I would have said yes."

Angelina Jolie: Yes, I am pregnant

jolie Bisexual ingenue Angelina Jolie is having a baby. "Yes, I am pregnant," she told an inquiring relief worker when she arrived at a Dominican Republic airport. "We're due in the summer." Yes, the "we" here is not Jenny Shimizu, but actually none other than Brad Pitt - whose spokeswoman confirmed the news. All the speculation and wonder about them is finally out in the open with this news coming after he filed the paperwork to become the adoptive father of Jolie's adopted children, Maddox, 4, and Zahara, 1, and after Jolie filed paperwork to change the kids' last names to Jolie-Pitt.

Florida gay marriage ban campaign bankrolled by GOP

florida Just in case you were actually thinking about dating or doing a Log Cabin Republican, here's more evidence your local self hating denialists are sure to blindly glaze over and ignore. The group trying to put a gay marriage ban on the Florida ballot in 2006 is being bankrolled by the state Republican Party. That's right, new state campaign finance records show that of the $193,000 that has been raised by Florida4marriage.org, $150,000 of it came in a single donation from the Florida Republican Party. "It certainly was helpful," Florida4Marriage chairman John Stemberger said of the donation, which he said was unsolicited. "I'm not at liberty to discuss the details, but they came to us and gave us the money."

Homophobe Grant Storms scolded for filing frivilous lawsuit

storms Action Wisconsin, the largest gay rights group in the state, has been awarded $87,000 in attorneys' fees by a judge who scolded Louisiana pastor Grant Storms (shown) and his lawyer for bringing a frivolous lawsuit claiming the group defamed him. Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Patricia McMahon said the lawsuit lacked merit from the day it was filed. Storms was one of several speakers at the "International Conference on Homo-Fascism" and Action Wisconsin obtained an audio recording of the conference and publicized remarks inciting violence and hatred. Storms said gay rights' opponents should "start taking it to the streets." He mimicked gun fire: "Boom, boom, boom, boom. There's twenty! Ca-ching." You probably remember when Southern Decadence had to get a restraining order against him too.

Gene Shalit apologizes for his Brokeback Mountain review

shalit Remember Today show movie critic Gene Shalit's Brokeback Mountain Review? After an outpouring of emails and phone calls he's issued an apology. "In describing the behavior of 'Jack' I used words ('sexual predator') that I now discover have angered, agitated, and hurt many people. I did not intend to use a word that many in the gay community consider incendiary. . . I certainly had no intention of casting aspersions on anyone in the gay community or on the community itself. I regret any emotional hurt that may have resulted from my review of 'Brokeback Mountain.'"

Action call for queers to oppose Alito nomination

alito The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is urging gays and lesbians to contact their U.S. senators to oppose Samuel Alito as a replacement for Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court. "The confirmation of Alito would put in mortal danger the constitutional and other legal rights and interests of LGBT people across the country," director Matt Foreman said. "If Alito serves on the Supreme Court, he will no longer be subject to any sort of review. He would team up with justices Scalia and Thomas to have their extremist views become the law of the land."

Gina Genovese first gay mayor in New Jersey

genovese Gina Genovese has been elected the first openly gay mayor in New Jersey, and she scored a victory in Long Hill, an affluent and traditionally Republican suburb where she's lived for 11 years. "She is a Democrat," said Frank Reilly, local volunteer firefighter. "That surprises me more than that she is openly gay." As for Genovese, she's one of those who thinks her sexuality is "irrelevant," adding, "It's just a shame that the label is being placed on me when it has no bearing on how I govern."

New California bill would limit gay panic defense

lieber Here's something I haven't heard of before. In California, Assemblywoman Sally J. Lieber (shown) has authored Assembly Bill 1160, a bill which limits the use of the 'gay panic defense.' It passed the Assembly Committee on Public Safety along party lines too so it's moving forward. The defense strategy that has long been employed by some murder defendants who argue that they did not intentionally kill their victim - he or she just flew into such a rage upon learning that the victim was gay or transgender that the killing was actually the lesser offense of manslaughter. A.B. 1160 declares that it is against public policy for a defendant to play upon the bias of the jury, or for a jury to allow bias against the victim to enter into its decision-making. Gay friendly Book of Daniel hit hard by zealots

book of daniel "The Book of Daniel" on NBC is a series about a priest starring Aidan Quinn and the show was singled out before its debut by wingnuts who condemned it as anti-Christian. The show has failed to attract advertising dollars as a result. One company that did advertise won't be back thanks to irate phone caller harassment. Bosses at an Indiana TV station posted security outside their studios on Friday night after receiving death threats. 5 of NBC's 232 affiliates chose to pre-empt the series last Friday; while in Little Rock, Arkansas, the local WB affiliate ran it instead. What's the big deal? Quinn plays Daniel Webster, an Episcopal suburban New York priest and his dysfunctional family, a daughter who sells marijuana, a son who is gay and another son who is a teenage lothario. Webster goes to Jesus for advice, a regular character. While it was cute on Joan of Arcadia, apparently Joan didn't have any gay kids.

Rosie returning to television, behind the camera

rosie Rosie O'Donnell is returning to television, but this time she'll be behind the camera on a sketch comedy show for Logo. The show, which is apparently going to be a lot like Saturday Night Live, will feature up-and-coming comedians, political and pop culture satire, and even some musical numbers. After all, what's gay television without musical numbers. Anyway, she's also planning on bringing on celebrity guests who are "friends of the LGBT community." Serving as the show's executive producer, Rosie is pairing with writers from The Rosie O'Donnell Show.

Los Angeles finalizes stricter gay bathhouse laws

Facilities must be inspected quarterly and pay annual fees of $1,088 each.

Heath Ledger lashes out at Utah and West Virginia

ledger Australian actor Heath Ledger has lashed out at the “immature” and “hilarious” idea of Brokeback Mountain boycotts in America over its gay content. He says, “Personally, I don’t think the movie is [controversial] but I think maybe the Mormons in Utah do. I think it’s hilarious and very immature of a society." Ledger also took a swipe at West Virginia. “I heard a while ago that West Virginia was going to ban it but that’s a state that was lynching people only 25 years ago so that’s to be expected.”

California gay marriage appeal case gets serious support

California More than 250 religious and civil rights organizations are urging the California Court of Appeal to put an end to state laws that deny same-sex couples the protections of marriage. The Court's currently hearing the State's appeal of the SF Superior Court decision which held the current statutory ban unconstitutional.

Larry Miller's Brokeback censorship brings call to action

brokeback Brokeback Mountain was pulled from the Jordan Commons Megaplex in Utah even though the film is breaking records over at Salt Lake's Broadway Theater. Why? Owner Larry Miller, who owns the Utah Jazz by the way, told KCPW prior to the film opening, "I think it's something that I have to let the market speak to some degree and not consider myself, cause I don't think I'm qualified to be the community censor." Shortly after that though, he became just that citing only a "Change in Booking."

New York gay masseur murder nets teen Jose Tavares

nypd Jose Tavares, 17, has been charged in the slaying of Schlomy Rejwan, a gay masseur in New York City. According to law enforcement Tavares "definitely played a role" - but the suspects family insists the killing was carried out by a mystery man and that the Manhattan Bridge High School junior went there seeking a massage having answered an advertisement in the back of an alternative newspaper and that a mystery man sexually assaulted Tavares and later killed Rejwan as the teen watched. Tavares has been charged with second-degree murder and first-degree arson. Authorities say he left Rejwan with his pants pulled down and set fire to the third-floor apartment to mask the murder having bound Rejwan's hands and feet with black wire.

Chris Buttars thinks talking about gay sex is criminal

buttars Utah Senator Chris Buttars wants to ban gay and lesbian support clubs from Utah high schools, which isn't what you'd expect from a man who looks so incredibly warm and open minded, right? He's also got a bill to require 'intelligent design' theory be taught along side evolution in public schools. Anyway, as for gay clubs he says, "If you're in a chess club you're going to be talking about chess. If you're in a dance club you're going to be talking about dance. If you're in a gay club you're going to be talking about human sexuality, and that's illegal, in fact it's criminal." Yes kids, they even want to make talking about sex a crime.

Finkbeiner takes a U-turn on gay rights

Washington: Key state Senate Republican Bill Finkbeiner announced he would reverse his position and support an anti-discrimination bill for gays and lesbians. What this likely means is that the next time this comes around a decadeslong political fight is going to finally roll in our favor.

But wait, there's more! Archives
