Massachusetts legislature rejects gay marriage ban amendment
The Massachusetts Legislature rejected a proposed change to the state constitution aimed at banning gay marriage, preserving the state's status as the only place in the nation where same-sex couples can legally wed. A year ago Massachusetts politicians appeared destined to undo the court order allowing same-sex couples to marry, but yesterday legislators voted 157-39 against the proposed constitutional amendment, defeating it for the second time. But of course it isn't over. Another proposed amendment that would ban both gay marriage and civil unions is already underway, although the earliest it could end up on the ballot is 2008.
