Gay servicemen and women fight Don't Ask, Don't Tell

sparks Three and a half years ago Derek Sparks, pictured, was a petty officer in the Navy, midway through a career he believed held great promise and from which he'd hoped to retire. Today, Sparks is among 12 former servicemen and women who are plaintiffs in a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of "don't ask, don't tell." Sparks was discharged in April 2002 after he was questioned by an officer and he acknowledged that he is gay. "I served for 14 years and a lot of it was uncomfortable," he said. "Some of my crewmates knew about me and it wasn't a big deal. I think the policy is wrong and it needs to be repealed."
