Starved's Laura Benanti plays bisexual bulimic/anorexic
The new FX comedy series Starved about four thirty-something-friends with eating disorders makes its television premiere tonight. Two-time Tony award nominated actress Laura Benanti plays Billie, a "bisexual recovering bulimic/anorexic who is an up-and-coming singer/songwriter." The other characters include a recovering anorexic, a compulsive overeater and a recovering bulimic. The series that's being described as a "comedic take on America's addiction to food" features four actors with real life eating disorders, including Benanti.
"Food is the most basic forum for discussing things like love and the absence of love; how we hurt ourselves and how we heal ourselves," Benanti says. During her time with the musical "Swing!" she concluded she was fat and eating almost nothing and working out ferociously, she took off 25 pounds, only by then her hair was falling out.
