Canadian Senate legalizes gay marriage

wedding day The Canadian Senate voted to legalize gay marriage nationwide late Tuesday night! The bill, which grants same-sex couples the same equal rights as heterosexuals to those could be signed into law as early as Wednesday. The bill grants same-sex couples the same legal rights, even though gay marriage has already been legalized in most Canadian provinces. The legislation drafted by Prime Minister Paul Martin's minority Liberal Party government easily passed the Senate, 47-21. The bill becomes law when it is signed by Canada's Governor-General. Once that happens, Canada will become only the fourth country in the world to legalize gay marriage nationwide, along with the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain.
