Dykes on Bikes federal patent rejected for being scandalous

vic germany Vic Germany thought registering a federal trademark for "Dykes on Bikes" wouldn't be a problem. The internationally known San Francisco nonprofit lesbian motorcycle group has been leading the Gay Pride parade for almost 30 years. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, however, has rejected the application twice on the grounds that "dyke" is vulgar, offensive and "scandalous." There's even talk here about protecting the public. Germany, and Queer Day, think the ruling is ridiculous. "We self-identify as dykes on bikes," says Germany. "To us, (the government's objection) is completely absurd."
