Both sides ask California Supremes to take on gay marriage

lockyer Twelve gay and lesbian couples who want to marry asked the California Supreme Court today to take the issue of same-sex marriage directly, skipping the appeals court. The petition joined a similar request filed last week by state Attorney General Bill Lockyer, pictured. The couples want the court to uphold San Francisco Superior Court Judge Richard Kramer's ruling in March that same-sex couples in California have a constitutional right to marry. Lockyer, who says that state domestic partner laws give adequate rights, has asked the court to overturn it.
