Crystal Waters knows her gay fans are the most important
Crystal Waters' raspy voice and her fondness for men’s suits had people questioning her sexuality from the gate. “I was so shy when I first started,” she says, but she learned a lot from drag queens. “Drag queens have these amazing stories about not being accepted, but they still put their best foot forward. I’ve learned a lot about self-confidence by watching gay men, (even though) they still say I’m gay. That used to bug me a little, but now I take it all in stride. They say you’re not famous until people say you’re gay." The secret of her success is she knows how important we are.
“The gay clubs were the first ones to embrace me. And to have a big dance hit, you do the gay clubs first, then you can cross over into the pop world. I always go to my fan-base first. The other side is so fickle,” she says. These days Waters has a lot on her plate. She's recording a new album, taking care of her two daughters, and next week she starts touring the globe with a concert in Russia.
