Gay icon Patti LaBelle is in the moment
Gay icon Patti LaBelle has a new cd out, "Classic Moments," and that means she's talking to the press. LaBelle was good friends with Sylvester: "He was a major drag queen. I loved him. He had style, he was working it. When I say work it, he really worked it." And pals with lesbian Nona Hendryx in the Bluebelles: "A great songwriter and a lady who chose her own way of living." Meanwhile, LaBelle, herself, has never had a same-sex sexual experience, and as she politically incorrectly puts it, "Honey, at 61 if I ain't done the 'fish trip,' I ain't doing it," she laughs. What she is doing though is reuniting with Hendryx for a brand new Labelle album and tour later this year.
As for gay marriage, and her gay fan base and her church fan base perhaps standing in opposite camps LaBelle says, "I think God means for you to marry whomever you love. When people start judging, you have to watch those people. ... I'm gonna keep it in my heart and have a church within. A lot of these people who say they're God's children, they're not - they're hypocrites."
