California Supreme Court: Gay domestic partner law stays
The California Supreme Court let stand a 2003 law that grants registered domestic partners many of the same rights and protections. Without comment the unanimous verdict upheld appellate and trial court rulings that the measure does not conflict with a voter-approved initiative defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman. The domestic partner law, signed by former Governor Gray Davis, pictured. The law, which went into effect January 1, grants registered couples virtually every spousal right available under state law except the ability to file joint income taxes.
