Gay pride recognition banned in Hillsborough County
A gay pride month display at West Gate Regional Library in Tampa upset a few parents. So what did Hillsborough County commissioners do in response? They passed a new policy that says the county will "abstain from acknowledging, promoting and participating'' in gay pride recognition or events. The West Gate library display was removed hours before the commission vote, according to library staff. Two gay pride displays at the John F. Germany branch downtown were removed as well. Commissioner Ronda Storms, pictured, sponsored the measure. Maybe you remember her homophobic face from the "Take Back Tampa" campaign of the 1990s that rescinded the amendment to the county's Human Rights Ordinance that protected gay residents saying "government should not be in the business of saying this is acceptable behavior.''
