ABC cancels Welcome to the Neighborhood

welcome to the neighborhood "Welcome to the Neighborhood," the ABC reality television series, has been cancelled. Queer Day is applauding. Let me tell you about it. The show premise had three white Texas Republican Christian families getting to pick who gets to move into the suburban dream home on their sleepy cul-de-sac, all done in the name of expose them to differences so they could overcome their biases. Sounds good in theory at least, right? There's a religious African American family, a "loud and boisterous" Hispanic family, an asian family that - guess what - operates a sushi restaurant, a "homosexual" white male couple who've adopted a black child, and let's not forget the white and rather ordinary looking Morgan family - but wait! Mrs. Morgan has " a little secret." My guess is she's a transsexual.

Gay icon Patti LaBelle is in the moment

labelle Gay icon Patti LaBelle has a new cd out, "Classic Moments," and that means she's talking to the press. LaBelle was good friends with Sylvester: "He was a major drag queen. I loved him. He had style, he was working it. When I say work it, he really worked it." And pals with lesbian Nona Hendryx in the Bluebelles: "A great songwriter and a lady who chose her own way of living." Meanwhile, LaBelle, herself, has never had a same-sex sexual experience, and as she politically incorrectly puts it, "Honey, at 61 if I ain't done the 'fish trip,' I ain't doing it," she laughs. What she is doing though is reuniting with Hendryx for a brand new Labelle album and tour later this year.

Small town smoothie straight men work yesterday's gay look

smoothies Salon's Heather Havrilesky writes, make way for "the smoothie, the modern version of a pretty (straight) boy, a waxed-chested breed that's far more prevalent and far more high-maintenance than those dabbling urban metrosexuals. The smoothie transcends the scope of 'Queer Eye' and is centered not in the big cities, but in the small towns where decades of boy bands and hair products and Chess King fashions have filtered into the cultural groundwater, until most young men have a grasp of personal hygiene, style, and flamboyant behavior that the older, crustier, and less hygienic among us can hardly fathom." And the worst part is it's all interfering with our gaydar.

Big Brother 6's Beau most likely to be gay

beau While I've been informing you about the queer shenanigans on Big Brother 6 in the UK, it's time to start thinking about Big Brother 6 here at home - and a contestant named Beau more specifically. Looks like we got at least one in the American house playing for our team. Beau's favorite films include chick flicks, Clueless and Legally Blonde. While his favorite actors, Matthew McConaughey and Tom Cruise, are rather noteworthy hot men, when it comes to actresses Beau's really into Dakota Fanning. The Pembroke Pines, Florida, contestant works as a personal shopper and he likes spending time in South Beach drinking sweet apple or coconut martinis. Need I say more?

California Supreme Court: Gay domestic partner law stays

davis The California Supreme Court let stand a 2003 law that grants registered domestic partners many of the same rights and protections. Without comment the unanimous verdict upheld appellate and trial court rulings that the measure does not conflict with a voter-approved initiative defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman. The domestic partner law, signed by former Governor Gray Davis, pictured. The law, which went into effect January 1, grants registered couples virtually every spousal right available under state law except the ability to file joint income taxes. The Campaign for California Families, along with the late Senator Pete Knight, originally challenged the law, saying it undermined Proposition 22image

Alberta considers fighting Canadian gay marriage law

stevens Alberta's justice minister Ron Stevens has refused to admit defeat in his battle against gay marriage, only to basically do so, more or less. He said Wednesday that the province is considering going to court to challenge Canadian Bill C-38, the federal legislation that was passed in Ottawa this week allowing for gay marriage in Canada. Stevens, however, did concede that his efforts would basically be moot because the federal legislation, when it becomes law, would take precedence over Alberta's Marriage Act anyway. The Act defines marriage as between a man and a woman. The new federal law amends that definition to "two persons." Stevens wants to challenge the law, and then says, "I know what the outcome will be."

Gay rumor about Tom Cruise and Rob Thomas escalates

cruise My good friends at Jossip did such an awesome job relating the Tom Cruise and Rob "Matchbox 20" Thomas gay rumor email that I'll just let them tell you it. What's it all about? "It has something to do with Tom Cruise hooking up with Matchbox 20's Rob Thomas, having Rob's wife find out about it and forcing Tom to hook up with Katie Holmes to knock the gay scandal out of the press. Or something." Jossip has actually included the full email for your perusal as well. My favorite part? "Once the contract was signed, photo ops were set up, leaks were made to the right places, and we've had celebrity relationship on steroids ever since." Indeed.

menard The Canadian House of Commons voted 158 to 133 to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide, taking a giant step closer to making Canada the third country in the world where gays and lesbians can legally wed. "It's about the right to love," gay Bloc Québécois lawmaker Réal Ménard, pictured, said after the vote. "When you are in love, things are different, and everyone is entitled to that." Meanwhile, the Conservatives are promising to revoke the legislation if they gain power to do so in the next election.

Queer Eye takes a rather Extreme turn

fab five Queer Eye's Fab Five are delivering something of a twist this season, or perhaps they've just decided to get a lot more extreme, as in Extreme Makeover more specifically. Where they've normally found schleppy fashion violating souls with hygiene problems, it seems the boys are turning off onto a somewhat higher road. Watch for straight guy Lt. Stephen Halliday, 45, a New York City firefighter who received third-degree burns on more than 50 percent of his body in a St. Albans house fire in late 2002. Halliday lay in a drug-induced coma the first six weeks of his recovery. He had several operations and skin grafts too.

Gay marriage gets thumbs up from UCC president John Thomas

thomas The United Church of Christ is set to cast a historic vote on a resolution in support of same-sex marriages this week, but the head of the denomination couldn't wait. The Rev. John H. Thomas, speaking at Emory University, publicly endorsed the measure, saying that the church's General Synod "should affirm the rights of gay, lesbian and transgender persons to have their covenanted relationships recognized by the state as marriages equal in name, privileges and responsibilities to married heterosexual couples. I believe our local churches, as they are able, should move toward the development of marriage equality policies so that the same liturgical and pastoral blessing and discipline may be offered all entering into covenanted relationships." The remark drew a lengthy standing ovation.

Penny had allegedly broken into the now ex-wife's house and threatened to kill her after hearing she had called Penny a "pervert in dresses." The ex-wife wasn't home, but sons Neil and Terry were. Jurors heard how Penny smashed her way into the house and grabbed Terry by the throat. Neil grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed her several times in the back and chest. She died hours later at the Northern General Hospital. The trial continues.

Etsitty filed a lawsuit against UTA and U.S. District Judge David Sam, referring to Etsitty as a "she," upheld the UTA action and dismissed the lawsuit, agreeing that she was not the victim of sexual stereotyping. Sam said laws prohibiting sex discrimination apply to a person's biological sex, ruling that transsexuals fall outside the 1989 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that banned discrimination against individuals who fail to meet the stereotype of their gender, such as a man who has effeminate mannerisms or a woman who behaves aggressively.

Georgina Beyer danced with the stars, wants more for charity

georgina beyer Georgina Beyer, the world's first transsexual politician elected to parliament, danced her way into Australian living rooms on the hit television show Dancing With The Stars. The New Zealand Labour MP, as always, kept right on calling it like she sees it too, complaining that only about one fifth - between 20 and 28 cents - per text or phone vote actually went to charity. Beyer, who dismissed TVNZ's line that the charity aspect of the show was not necessarily the only motivation for viewers to vote, said the public should have been told. "So why bother involving the charities then? For me the charity aspect was a major motivator to do the program. It was a way of giving the public more of an incentive. I do have a feeling that the public have a right to know," she said.

Brian Graden's Logo delivers gay TV this week

graden The Logo gay television network is finally arriving on Thursday, June 30th, and the gay man who is molding it, Brian Graden, grew up in rural Illinois and attended Oral Roberts University. If it weren't for his proven programming track record with MTV, VH1 and CMT, we'd be afraid, very afraid. He assisted in developing "South Park" and delivered the four-letter-word family "The Osbournes" to American living rooms. He's been an envelope pusher - and within a gay network context I think we're going to see more. Logo, too, which will initially be seen in about 10 million homes with digital cable, is a given, whereas the Here! and Q networks are offering pay networks. (Thanks Carl)

LGBT Pride celebrated all over the map

flag Gay Pride parades and celebrations were held in countless locations over the weekend, from urban centers like San Francisco and New York City, big cities like Chicago and Houston, on down to small towns like the historically homophobic Conway, Arkansas. Even though pride was banned in Tampa, Florida, people filled the streets there announcing "Pride is Back!" Pride made another significant comeback in Wichita, Kansas, returning after a five year absence. Muncie, Indiana, held their very first, while other celebrations continued nationally like the ones in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Atlanta, Georgia, Lansing, Michigan, Denver, Colorado, Seattle, Washington, St. Louis, Missouri. Events were held internationally as well in many cities including Toronto, Ontario, Berlin, Germany, and Kolkata, India. And the award for the most ridiculous photo headline goes to MSNBC (second picture). Hope you all had a rockin' Pride weekend!

Murder of Amancio Corrales mobilizes a community

delilah I admit it. I blew it in not previously reporting on the Arizona murder of Amancio Corrales, 23, a gay man and popular drag performer known as "Delilah" - pictured. For some strange reason I kept confusing the story with the murder of John Mayos. Perhaps there's a psychic connection and I'll wind up on Medium next season. But for now, with overdue respect, I must tell you that his body was found, in drag, in the Colorado River on May 6. Cause of death has been reported only as "violent trauma." There haven't been any leads in the case, although there's been talk on Gay In Yuma that Corrales may have been killed by U.S. Marines.

With the sidewalks jammed, I scooped my little guy and held him in my arms and we watched the passing carnival - muscle boys in tiny swimsuits, transvestites on roller skates, gay celebrities sitting on the back of open convertibles. blair Euan Blair, British Prime Minister Tony Blair's oldest son, pictured, will be doing an internship in Washington D.C. this summer. What's so queer about that? As Congresswoman Louise Slaughter said, "It is extremely surprising that the son of a Labour Prime Minister would intern with the Republican majority staff on the committee."
