Gender bender chemicals blamed for feminizing baby boys

Phthalates "Gender-bending" chemicals that mimick the female hormone oestrogen are being found to be responsible for the feminization of baby boys. Phthalates, which make plastics more pliable, are found in many cosmetics, toys, baby-feeding bottles and paints and can leak into water and food. Studies are showing they blunt the influence of testosterone. Interesting, as are the reactions. "This research highlights the need for tougher controls of gender-bending chemicals," says WWF UK toxic advisor Gwynne Lyons, otherwise "wildlife and baby boys will be the losers."
