First Romanian gay pride met with anger

bucharest About 500 Romanian gays marched through central Bucharest on Saturday as passers-by booed and shouted angrily. As gays and lesbians held banners reading "Out and proud" and "Stop prejudice, I love who I want," riot police protected the marchers from onlookers shouting, "Shame on you" and "Get out of Romania." 10 members of the far right organization "New Right" broke police ranks waving banners reading "Against homosexuality, for normality" and were detained by police. It was the first event of its kind in the formerly communist country.

Cambodian King Norodom Sihanouk supports gay marriage - on his blog

sihanouk Cambodia's now retired King Norodom Sihanouk, 82, wrote on his blog -"I thank you for insulting me." Sihanouk expressed his support for gay marriage and apparently not everybody was in agreement with him. He says, "My country, Cambodia, has chosen to be a liberal democracy since 1993. Every Cambodian ... including the King has the right to express freely their view." Sihanouk took on the French empire to win Cambodia's independence. During the Vietnam War he was ousted in a U.S.-supported coup. (Thanks Edna)

UK gay priests can get married, they just can't get laid

williams A Church of England proposal has would allow gay priests to marry their boyfriends, although they still have to remain celibate. A group of senior bishops led by Rowan Williams (pictured), the Archbishop of Canterbury, believe the decision ensures that gay and lesbian clergy who wish to register relationships under the new "civil partnerships" law - which would give them many of the tax and inheritance advantages of married couples — will not lose their licenses to be priests. They will, however, have to give an assurance to their diocesan bishop that they will abstain from sex. Question for those who know - can heterosexual priests have sex with their spouse?

Homophobe Ralph Reed dumped by Microsoft

microsoft Microsoft announced that they've severed ties with Ralph Reed, GOP lobbyist and former head for nearly a decade of the highly annoying Christian Coalition. Microsoft, which has had Reed on their payroll for years as a political consultant, pulled its support for a Washington state gay-rights bill hours before the vote that they'd previously supported. Microsoft has since said they'll support such legislation in the future.

Gay All-American lacrosse goalie Andrew Goldstein tells his story

goldstein Dartmouth lacrosse goalie Andrew Goldstein has routinely taken on 100 mile an hour hard rubber balls with 110 saves this season, yet ESPN is acknowledging his bravery being an out gay athlete on Sunday's SportsCenter, as well as with a seven page online article. "If I can help one kid out there struggling with the things I struggled with. ... You're trying to fall asleep and you start thinking, 'I'm not like everyone else ... I always imagined that lies and hiding would be a large part of getting through the day." (Thanks Nico)

Gay rights win and lose in Colorado

bill owens While some are busy calling Colorado Springs the Holy Land, the Governor of Colorado itself vetoed one bill that would have provided gay employment rights, while signing another that added gays and the disabled to the list of those protected from hate crimes. So in case you weren't paying attention, apparently it's okay to fire us randomly for being queer, but it's not okay to kill us. Got it? Owens said he vetoed it because it would have prompted a rash of lawsuits, while failing to acknowledge there could be very good reasons for them.

Gender bender chemicals blamed for feminizing baby boys

Phthalates "Gender-bending" chemicals that mimick the female hormone oestrogen are being found to be responsible for the feminization of baby boys. Phthalates, which make plastics more pliable, are found in many cosmetics, toys, baby-feeding bottles and paints and can leak into water and food. Studies are showing they blunt the influence of testosterone. Interesting, as are the reactions. "This research highlights the need for tougher controls of gender-bending chemicals," says WWF UK toxic advisor Gwynne Lyons, otherwise "wildlife and baby boys will be the losers." Ain't it strange when your queer sensibilities wind up battling with your environmentalism? Here's a related story.

Nightline looks at when gay men and lesbians knew

musto ABC's "Nightline" is devoting an episode to Robert Trachtenberg's book, "When I Knew," which is a compilation of recollections by gay men and women, some famous, some not, about the moment they "knew" they were gay. The book includes the insights of Michael Musto (pictured), Simon Doonan, Arthur Laurents, B.D. Wong, Marc Shaiman and Liz Smith reports that "Nightline" will be presenting many of the contributors and their parents. Smith writes, "The very first page gets the ball rolling; film marketer Andrew Freedman recalls: 'My father was watching the evening news. The announcer said Judy Garland had died. I fainted. I was nine.'" The episode will air on June 15.

Benedict meets gay governor Nicchi Vendola

ratzinger Pope Benedict XVI made his first trip outside Rome since his election six weeks ago and he visited the province of Puglia, home of gay Catholic communist governor Nicchi Vendola and his partner. It was there he rambled on about his "fundamental commitment ... to reconstitute the full and visible unity of all the followers of Christ." Vendola said, "Recognition of civil unions does not represent any threat to the institution of marriage and the family. There is a reality of loving co-operation which asks to be granted the dimension of a citizen's right." As Cardinal Ratzinger, the Pope declared homosexuality to be "a more or less strong tendency ordered towards an intrinsic moral evil", and worked hard to suppress Catholic gay organisations. This included prohibiting priests and nuns from doing pastoral work with gay men and lesbians.

God is in my iPod

god is in my ipod My original amazement at the sheer complexity of Apple's programming, the way they somehow managed to designate the shuffle setting to put certain styles distinctly together with unexpected aural delights blending ever so perfectly, all of that has given way under the weight of realizing I'm dealing with providence itself. 5600 songs selected at random - and my recently acquired iPod follows a This Mortal Coil track featuring Dominic Appleton's deliciously suspect vocals with something by Breathless, his primary band? I'm walking home late at night and Kate Bush starts to sing about Cloudbusting just as it begins to rain? Behind the wheel of the Volvo I take a quick left into Chinatown just as Amanda Lear begins to sing, yes, that's right, Queen of Chinatown? I think God is in my iPod, and by that I mean the God of my own personal understanding as defined by me today, especially now that we all know what's on Jesus' ipod. So when some drunken skeeze told me about ipod tarot readings, of course I had to try them out, and oddly enough they've providing a week of entertaining, if not actually intuitive and informative insights.

California: Calling issues of sexual orientation outside the boundaries of city business, the Los Altos City Council denied a request from the Los Altos High School Gay-Straight Alliance to proclaim the city's second Gay Pride Day. [Previous Coverage]

Massachusetts Supremes deny gay marriage challenge

massachusetts marriage The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court said that gay marriages can continue today, rejecting a lawsuit and calling the attempt "purely academic." The court said it had previously denied a bid to halt gay marriages by C. Joseph Doyle, executive director of the Catholic Action League. "Nothing has transpired in the interim that materially changes the situation or which warrants the truly extraordinary measures sought now," the court wrote.

Exxon Mobil votes against protecting gays - again

exxon On a day when oil prices jumped again for a company that made a $25 billion profit last year, Exxon Mobil Chief Executive Lee Raymond said, "One of our key strengths is to see past the short-term market noise and focus on the long-term challenges and trends." Apparently that includes ignoring the trend of having employment policies explicitly barring discrimination against gays. Exxon Mobil, the only Fortune 100 oil company not to have such a policy, actually repealed the one they did have three years ago, making them the only American company to take such protections away. Shareholders voted against such a policy again today and the company recommended that they do so. Needless to say there won't be any tigers in my tank. They also own Esso as well as On The Run convenience stores.

Transsexual Big Brother UK winner Nadia Almada wants to Make Poverty History

nadia almada Nadia Almada, the Portuguese transsexual who won Big Brother UK, is putting her celebrity status to good use working with the organization Make Poverty History. As a new season of contestants enter the Big Brother House (two are gay, two are bisexual) she's launching the White Band Weekend with a speech in Sackville Park urging the LGBT to back the campaign, as well as organizing a human chain across Canal Street.

Queer eye for a Purim ritual

purim UCLA students recently gave Queen Esther, Haman and Queen Vashti a makeover. To jazz up the deliverance of the Jews from evil Haman, 10 undergrads staged "Purim for Divas." Perhaps this will help if you're unfamiliar, like me. Anyway, a bisexual woman donning a black cape, Mardi Gras mask and triangular hat played the evil Haman. A drag queen resplendent in tight sparkly skirt and heels appeared as Queen Vashti; Queen Esther was a gay man in a dress — his long, brown hair flowing freely. Afterwards, the students drank and danced the night away. "Women embraced women; men flirted with men. A good time was had by all." Who knew Purim was so much fun?

Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2005 offers federal gay, trans protections

barney frank National federal hate crimes legislation has been filed. The Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2005 will strengthen existing federal hate crime laws by allowing the Department of Justice to assist local prosecutions, investigate and prosecute cases in which violence occurs because of the victim's sexual orientation or gender identity. The legislation, submitted by five legislators including Barney Frank, pictured, will finally give violent crimes perpetrated against us the weight of federal prosecution if passed. Needless to say, it's already a hot potato. Don't they know how stupid they sound? "A news conference held to announce the legislation, as diverse as the barroom scene in the first 'Star Wars' movie, was actually more of a pep rally for deviant sexual lifestyles..."

Surrogate mothers giving birth for gay couples

surrogate for gays Dallas suburban homemaker Lura Stiller, 34, says everything she knew about gay people she lured from "Will and Grace" and "The L Word" prior to meeting Dr. Cary Friedman and his partner, Dr. Rick Wellisch. In December, Stiller gave birth to Samantha, conceived with a donor egg and the sperm from one of the partners - they chose not to know which. It's one of the stories in a lengthy New York Times look at surrogate mothers giving birth for gay couples. (Thanks Tyler)

Bisexual transgender writer Toby Hill-Meyer wants better language

hill meyer Toby Hill-Meyer told her audience, "I have butch days, and I have fem days. I have different feelings on different days, and I feel free to fulfill them." Instead of being attracted to men and women, as people assume when she says she is bisexual, she said the more gender-deviant a person is and the more in between the two sexes, the more she will be attracted to them, which is why "bisexual" is an often confounding term for Hill-Meyer. It suggests only two genders, when really she sees many more. There truly is a lack of suitable language in English to address the complex issues surrounding gender identity, especially for bisexuals.

Gay marriage mayor Jason West fails to circumvent process

jason west The New York Court of Appeals ruled today that New Paltz Village Mayor Jason West will stand trial at home, even though he tried to circumvent the usual process and go straight to the top. West faces 24 misdemeanor counts for marrying same-sex couples without marriage licenses last year. West still has a town motion to dismiss the charges - and it's possible that could happen. Meanwhile, other gay marriage cases currently in the court system are being favored because "they have better legal status to contest the law because it affects their rights, rather than West who allegedly defied the law as a public official."

Gay minister Martin Knight fakes rape claim to leave church

UK: Gay minister Martin Knight, ashamed of being gay, faked a rape claim to get out of the church, the Manchester Crown Court heard today. The police manhunt involved nearly 30 officers and cost £14,000.

Gay filmmaker Ismail Merchant passes

merchant Ismail Merchant, film producer, director and screenwriter, passed away at the age of 68. Merchant's career contributed to bringing 40 ornate costume dramas to the screen including gay favorite "Maurice," as well as three Oscar Best Picture nominations for "A Room With a View," "Howards End," and "The Remains of the Day." He had recently had surgery for abdominal ulcers. And in case you were wondering, the mainstream press has entirely ignored his sexuality.

First gay pride festival in Romania this weekend

Romania: The very first gay pride festival will be held in Bucharest this weekend, even though the mayor of Bucharest refused permission. The mayor was overruled.

Queer youth in Nevada County tell it like it is

nevada county queer youth It's not something I see a lot of, particularly from a place like Nevada County, California. Yet here, Worlds away from San Francisco, The Union delivers an extensive two part interview with predominately rural queer youth about their experience, in their own words, on what they like to do, whether being gay is a choice... Ryan: "I dated a girl for like six months and that was just a strange stage in my life. It never felt right, the entire time it felt like it wasn’t a situation I wanted to be in." Part 2 takes a closer look at their views on religion and tolerance.

Maine gay marriage amendment debate reignites

duprey Maine gay rights activists clashed with the right wingnuts at a legislative hearing on a proposed gay marriage constitutional amendment. Representative Brian Duprey actually said, "For us to ignore [God's] will is to ignore him, and I will not sit idly by as the homosexual activists tear apart the most important building block of our society." The good news is Duprey submitted a similar measure last year that was defeated by the Democrats in both houses on a largely party-line vote.

Homophobic cross burning in Durham outside St. Luke's

cross burning Three large crosses were burned in different Durham, North Carolina, locations around the city during a span of just over an hour. Yellow fliers with Ku Klux Klan sayings were found at one location, police said. The first burning was reported outside St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, one of several churches picketed earlier this month by Phelps and the Westboro hatemongers.

Belfast gay murder investigation runs cold

Yellowknife to celebrate Gay Pride - and straight pride

woytuik In Canada's Northwest Territories, Yellowknife City Councillors learned this week that the mayor had proclaimed June 10th as Gay Pride Day - and then the mayor proclaimed that June 9th would be Heterosexual Day, following a proposal from Alan Woytuik, pictured. And while Councillor Kevin O'Reilly is calling the move an embarrassment to the city and a mockery of a legitimate request, to which I concur. Woytuik says, "I feel that recognizing the contributions of heterosexuals is just as legitimate as recognizing the contributions of gay and lesbian communities, so I don't feel there's any reason for anyone to object to this particular proclamation." Funny, I thought every day was Heterosexual Day.

Gay comic Mario Cantone is a Laugh Whore

cantone Mario Cantone is probably most well known as Anthony Marantino, the ruthless gay wedding stylist from "Sex and the City." Now he's got himself his own Showtime special, Laugh Whore, a taping of his Broadway comedy show. A New York Times review said, "Much of the funniest material in Laugh Whore expresses a buoyantly, exuberantly, even belligerently gay sensibility." Cantone, however, says he doesn't want to just paly to a gay crowd - "I want a mix. I don't like performing to all of one thing for anything."

New Jersey lesbian couple gets both their names on birth certificate

locicero family A New Jersey lesbian couple won the right to have both their names listed on a birth certificate as the parents of a baby girl born to one of the women through artificial insemination. The decision is the first of its kind in New Jersey and it essentially guarantees both women full parental rights to the child. Kimberly Robinson and Jeanne LoCicero registered in New York as domestic partners in 2003 and got married in Canada last summer.

Transsexual Donita Ganzon's marriage invalidated

ganzon Donita Ganzon and Jiffy Javellana showed up for what they thought was a routine interview at US Citizenship and Immigration Services in Los Angeles. U.S. citizen Ganzon was born in the Philippines and had been living with Javellana, her husband of three years, a Filipino immigrant. They thought a green card would be replacing his temporary work visa. Instead, his application for permanent residency was denied and he faces deportation. Why? Ganzon casually mentioned to an immigration officer that she'd had a sex change operation years before. Citing the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as strictly between a man and a woman, the Department of Homeland Security argues they're in a gay marriage - which is ridiculous.

Gays fondling nipples in trouble with New York City parks

New York City: You can kiss, you can hold hands, and you can hug, but fondling your partner's nipples is prohibited in city parks - or at least that's how some officers are interpreting the law.

Scott Bloch refuses to protect gays despite bipartisan call to do so

bloch Special counsel Scott Bloch told a Senate panel yesterday that he lacks the legal authority to enforce the Bush administration's ban on discrimination against federal employees based on sexual orientation. Block testified before a Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs subcommittee that if a federal manager fires, reassigns or takes some other action against an employee simply because that employee is gay, there is nothing in federal law that would permit the Office of Special Counsel to protect the worker, adding that "The courts have specifically rejected sexual orientation as a class protection."

Like a prayer

I'm always reminded of one of the scariest books I've ever skimmed when things like this happen. Sometimes my brain defaults to an apocalyptic setting, only not the one they're always talking about. Did you know the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange released more than 10,000 pages of letters, handwritten notes and other documents from the personnel files of 15 priests and teachers as part of its $100-million settlement in yet another in the ongoing series of class-action sexual abuse lawsuits? And they say they know the definition of evil and it is us. Please. I'm not religious, but even I can see the sin canning your pastor for teaching love and tolerance.

The end result is that we need to take time out for the truly important things in life, like cheering for Carrie Underwood and screaming like a teenage girl as Alias pulled their ridiculous excuse for a season out from a serious tail spin to deliver three final hours that quite possibly made up for it all. And with the recent arrival of Tivo and it's freedoms, coupled with the season finale spree winding down anyway, it seems the delerious summer days are about to unfold like a cashmere blanket. I'm just going to go on out and wrap myself up in it.

Death of young lesbian Colony star Carina Stephenson suicide?

stephenson The airing of "The Colony," a History Channel reality TV series, was postponed the night before airing in Britain, when young lesbian Carina Stephenson, 17, was found dead in the woods near her home. Stephenson and her family spent four months last year filming the show in Australia, a show looking at how modern families would have coped as settlers at the beginning of the 19th century. Stephenson was reported missing last week and her death is so far being called a suicide.

PFLAG to take on Dobson over gay love in Seattle

reph A Seattle area church is hosting Dobson's national "Love Won Out" conference next month that claims gayness is preventable. Redneck looking host Glenn Reph, pictured, said, "It's not negative. It's not gay bashing," adding that letting children "choose" homosexuality "would be like letting them choose murder or adultery." The good news is PFLAG is organizing a counter conference called "Love Welcomes All." University of Washington professor Doug Haldeman will speak, who said, "There is no evidence to suggest that people can successfully change their homosexual orientation. There is, however, considerable evidence to suggest that many people are harmed psychologically in the attempt to (do so)."

Arizona gay marriage amendment particularly troublesome

mcneal and mclean Arizona's proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage has Damien McNeal and Richard McLean preparing for financial trouble. The initiative includes broad language that not only would prohibit gays and lesbians from marrying, but also bar the state, as well as counties, cities and school districts, from creating or recognizing any legal status for unmarried couples. In other words, health benefits that both Pima County and the city of Tucson offer to same-sex partners of their employees would be nullified. The city's domestic-partner registry also would be void, along with the few privileges it entails, such as hospital visitation rights. "It would be emotionally and financially devastating if those benefits are taken away," said McNeal who has been with his partner 23 years.

The new radical queer world at Yale

loren Imagine a world where gender is fluid, where a person can cross the boundaries of male and female, gay and straight, and freely roam the in-betweens. Imagine that world at Yale, then read the 11 page Hartford Courant story "The New Radical" with many photos. "Loren Krywanczyk wants to change the way you think about gender. Call him Loren, or call him Lauren. Call him he, or call him she. He won't correct you. Correcting implies there's a right answer. There isn't one."

Gay censorship issue continues at East Bakersfield High

east bakersfield high school In California, Kern County Superior Court Judge Arthur E. Wallace declined to immediately overrule East Bakersfield High School Principal John Gibson's censorship of several gay student newspaper stories. Thus the request for an emergency order to publish the stories in The Kernal's year-end issue was denied. Wallace said, "This is an important issue that would require an opportunity to have a full and complete hearing."
