Heidi Krieger, now Andreas, and the price of victory

krieger East German shot-put champion Heidi Krieger was doped to win medals for the Communist cause. But the steroids she took changed her body forever. Now, having had a sex change and changed his name to Andreas, Krieger tells the Independent's Tony Paterson why he's determined to find justice. Standing in front of the big Stars and Stripes flag that decorates his shop, he fights back tears as he adds: "The thing is, they killed Heidi." A disturbing read and some background trial information.
