Transgender pop group Lady set to take Korea by storm

lady The four foxy sirens of "Lady," Korea's first transgender pop group, are creating a media frenzy surrounding their soon to be released debut album. The sound is more of a Euro-dance style with Binu, Sine and Sahara (pictured) and Yoona destined to to be a hit. "We love chocolate, shopping and gossip. Hispanic AIDS Forum's trans discrimination lawsuit dismissed

New York: A New York state appeals court dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Hispanic AIDS Forum after their landlord refused to renew its lease because transgendered clients were using the building's common-area rest rooms.

Desperate Housewife Eva Longoria wishes she had a lesbian experience

longoria Eva Longoria, one of the stars of ABC's Desperate Housewives who plays the cheating former model Gabrielle Solis, wishes that she was sexually experienced with women because they're such "beautiful creatures." In an interview with Britain's Daily Star newspaper Longoria said, "I wish I had that gay experience. Women are beautiful creatures. Maybe I'm just holding out for the future." The 30-year-old beauty also revealed she was such an ugly child her family joked she must have been adopted or switched at the hospital. Her sisters use to refer to her as "the dark, ugly one".

Mrs. Oregon pageant director denied letter by Portland mayor

mrs. oregon The director of the Mrs. Oregon America pageant says Portland's mayor is discriminating against her organization. Each year the pagent asks for a letter from the mayor to congratulate the contestants. This year the mayor's office declined. "We reviewed your request and will have to decline... The city of Portland does not discriminate based on sexual orientation." The pageant director has cried heterosexual discrimination claiming the pageant defines marriage as the legal union of one man and one woman according to state law. Alberta: Calgary Bishop Fred Henry refused to take back comments he made comparing homosexuality to prostitution and adultery. With human rights complaints lodged against him Henry said, "I stand by the letter, I wouldn't change one comma."

California judge stays his gay marriage decision

kramer San Francisco County Superior Court Judge Richard Kramer, the California judge who ruled that gay couples should be allowed to marry, stayed his decision yesterday pending the outcome of anticipated appeals. On March 14 Kramer ruled that gay couples in California can marry and that the state law against it was unconstitutional. While that decision was stayed automatically, yesterday's decision was meant to make it clear that no gay couples can get married in California until appeals have run their course. The dispute may not be settled for years. Wired

Three men convicted in Micah Painter gay attack

painter In Washington state, three Whatcom County men were convicted of felony malicious harassment and assault in an attack on a Seattle gay man, Micah Painter, pictured. Vadim Samusenko, 21, David Kravchenko, 20, and Yevgeniy Savchak, 18, were driving in a truck and spotted Painter and began yelling homophobic slurs at the 24-year-old Painter who was celebrating Seattle Pride. The trio asked Painter if he was gay before breaking a vodka bottle and slicing Painter's face, shoulder and back, all the while punching him. Samusenko faces 31 to 35 months in prison. Kravchenko and Savchak each face nine to 15 months. KIRO

Governor Baldacci signs Maine gay rights bill into law

baldacci Maine Governor John Baldacci called it "a proud day for Maine" as he signed into law a bill to protect gays and lesbians from discrimination, making Maine the sixth and final New England state to do so. "This act not only offers essential civil rights, but serves as a welcome," the Democratic governor who submitted the legislation told cheering supporters. "Our doors are open to all people. This is a proud day for Maine." The law takes effect in late June, 90 days after this year's regular legislative session adjournment.

Ohio: Representative William Healy says he'll introduce a bill to close a perceived loophole in the domestic-violence law created by the constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, defining domestic violence as an act committed when individuals reside together, regardless of marital status.

Israel: A gay leader in Jerusalem says fervent World Pride event opposition by Jewish, Muslim and Christian religious leaders had made organizers of the international gay festival more determined than ever to go ahead with plans for the 10-day event.

Australia denies family visas to gay partners of badly needed shrinks

vanstone Two overseas-trained doctors have been prevented from taking positions at Campbelltown and Liverpool hospitals because the immigration department will not issue their same-sex partners with a family visa. Frustrated health officials and Australian Democrats have appealed to the Minister for Immigration, Amanda Vanstone, pictured, saying the decision exacerbated the chronic shortage of psychiatrists in public hospitals. The situation is actually drastic with an enormous backlog of vacancies.

LGV arrives in the UK

UK: LGV has arrived in the UK. The rare sexually transmitted disease returned in 2003 when 100 gay men in Rotterdam were infected and has since emerged in France, Germany, Belgium and the US.

Transvestites earn respect in Muslim Indonesia

Some are prostitutes, some priests, some work in beauty salons and some bring luck. Transvestites are a part of everyday life in the primarily-Muslim Indonesia. The "waria" - so named because they are born a boy or "pria", but have the characteristics of a "wanita", girl - but for many, adult life brings compensation and are viewed more favorably than gays. Many come from poor backgrounds and often emerge as the chief breadwinners in their family. In the east Java island area of Ponorogo, traditional "Reog" dancers are supposed to keep their strength by staying away from women, however sexual relations with young transvestites are tolerated. "They are the guardians of esoteric traditions, from the Bugis mythology. They are mediators betweens the human world and the divine world (because) nobody really knows if the divine is male or female", he says. Hindustan Times

Gay rights threatened by religious rights bill

santorum Major homophobe Republican Senator Rick Santorum and former presidential candidate John Kerry have introduced a bill to amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to require employers to do more to accomodate religious employees. Even Senator Hillary Clinton has signed on to the idea of protecting people from being penalized for taking time off to observe religious holidays or wearing turbans and such. While good intentioned, we already see the God Hates Fags signs posted in offices, hear the preaching at work about the sins of the homosexual lifestyle, not to mention the refusals to work with us on religious grounds. Q Television signs nationwide deal

USA: Q Television Network announced an agreement with Products On Demand Channel Inc. to make Q Television's signature programming available to 107 stations nationwide beginning June 1, 2005.

Bowling Green gay activists take on looksism

Kentucky: Queer activists at Bowling Green State University are tackling Looksism as part of a week of queer awareness events. "Looksism is the discrimination or prejudice against people based on their appearance," Freshman Joseph Aufenthie said.

Outfront Minnesota calls for action

minnesota Minnesota's House Rules Committee voted 15-8 yesterday to recommend that the full House vote to approve HF6, a proposal to amend the Minnesota constitution to outlaw all forms of legal recognition for same-sex couples and their families. This vote, scheduled by committee leaders at the last minute and with very little publicity, is the last procedural hurdle HF6 must clear before the proposal comes to the full House for a vote, a vote that could occur as early as tomorrow. Outfront Minnesota is calling everyone to action.

Honduras bans gay marriages and adoptions

Honduran lawmakers have unanimously approved a constitutional amendment prohibiting gay marriages and adoptions. The vote came just months after Honduras' formally recognized several gay civil rights groups, a move that outraged and organized church leaders in the predominately Roman Catholic country. The amendment also denies recognition of same-sex marriages or unions performed elsewhere. Honduran Lesbian Group spokeswoman Adela Martinez decried the vote, saying, "There is a huge number of lesbians and gays who are anxious about formalizing their unions with someone of the same sex and adopting children." Shirley Manson blasts Bush on gay marriage ban

Spanish authorities order gay couple Barlow and Drewitt's school closed

barlow and drewitt You may recall Barrie Barlow and Tony Drewitt, a wealthy British couple who conceived several children through surrogacy, then left the UK, saying they had faced kidnap threats. They moved to "a more tolerant" Spain, but it isn't going well. With the 5-year-olds bullied at school the enterprising dads started the Lady of Elche International School to provide better education for ex-patriates living in Spain. Now the local education authority has ordered its closure, saying it lacks a proper license. Barlow and Drewitt think the problem is they're gay. Times Online

Straight woman writes about being harassed as a lesbian

Indiana: Danni Smith, a Ball State University senior, is a straight woman trying to say something important by writing about how two men who thought she was gay harassed her. Laudable. The men called her a dyke and drove their truck through a puddle to splash water on her, which she thinks is a gay-bashing.

Editors of gay mag Boston Spirit promise grown-up articles

"We're about more than sex, drugs and HIV," said Steve Lyons, executive editor of the glossy, which will publish six times a year. "We are a lifestyle magazine and lifestyle encompasses a great many areas. We don't focus just on the politics of gayness or the so-called nightlife culture of the gay and lesbian community." Mary Cheney to write memoir

cheney Mary Cheney, the quite often disappointing lesbian daughter and campaign manager of Vice President Dick Cheney, sold the rights to a memoir to Simon & Schuster for an advance of about $1 million. Cheney, who conspicuously had zero to say about her personal life or her opinions before the election, said she looks forward to writing about her experience. "I've been involved with campaigns as a family member, a staffer, and though I certainly never intended it, as a political target for the other side. It's been an amazing experience - uplifting, frustrating, educational and always entertaining."

Alan Cumming blasts Bloomberg at GLAAD awards

cumming Page Six reports that when Alan Cumming accepted a Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation award at the Marriott Marquis this week he blasted New York City's Mayor Bloomberg's opposition to same-sex marriage in the process. After Cumming was presented his award, by the lovely and talented Jessica Lange, Cumming said that Bloomgberg was "not a true New Yorker" and that he was dismissive of the gay community. The crowd of 1,500 gave Cumming a standing ovation, although the mayor's former adviser Jonathan Capehart stayed in his seat.

Gay Israeli couples petition Supreme Court to recognize Canadian marriages

The Association of Civil Rights in Israel submitted petitions with Israel's Supreme Court on behalf of Yossi Ben-Ari and Loren Shuman, and Yosef Bar-Lev and Yaron Lahav, both gay couples who were married in Toronto in November 2003. Interior Ministry spokeswoman Sabine Haddad acknowledged the couples had submitted written requests for the ministry to recognize their marriages, but said it was obligated to turn them down. The petitions build their case on a Supreme Court decision from the 1960s which obligated authorities to recognize a foreign marriage between a Christian and a Jew, honoring documents issued by foreign authorities. Rick Worthy plays new gay character Didion on ABC's Eyes

rick worthy ABC is adding a reason to stay tuned after "Lost" and "Alias" and with "Law & Order" on one side and "The West Wing" on the other it's about time we get some fun action in the timeslot, complete with a gay character named Didion, played by Rick Worthy (shown). In the series opener, a friend of senior partner Didion witnessed a hate crime and is being threatened by the skin-head perpetrators. Worthy faces off with a racist to protect a client. Kids book King & King has Oklahoma legislators in an uproar

king and king Seventy Oklahoma lawmakers have signed a petition authored by Rep. Sally Kern who presented it to the Metropolitan Library Commission. A family in her district had made a complaint. The problem? They want the children's book "King & King" removed from the library's children’s section, in fact backwards legislator Curt Roggow wants the story about a gay prince banned altogether. Another supporter, Rep. Mike Jackson, says, "I don’t want to restrict free speech, (it's just that) parents don't even know a lot of times that these kinds of materials are available for children to check out."

Neo Nazi Higdon gets life for brutal Philip Walsted murder

walsted David Higdon, 22, was sentenced to life in prison for the beating death of Philip Walsted, pictured. Walsted was found beaten with a baseball bat near his Tucson, Arizona, home on June 12, 2002. He died later that day at University Medical Center. Prosecutors said the attack began as a robbery but that Higdon's neo-Nazi beliefs led to the murder. Walsted was struck in the head with the bat up to 20 times. Following the verdict prosecutor Teresa Godoy said, "I think this is the first time in 31 months that I've seen Philip's mother smile." Arizona Daily Star

Jason Gage murder draws Matthew Shepard parallels in Iowa

Jason Gage, 29, had a rare ability to energize any room, made friends easily and would do anything for someone in need, like the time he gave a drunk stranger $46 for a taxi ride home. He was found dead in his apartment, bludgeoned with a beer bottle and stabbed in the neck with a shard of glass. He died from severe head injuries. Within hours, police arrested Joseph Lawrence, 23, charging him with first-degree murder. Lawrence’s fiancee, Elizabeth Hostetler, says Lawrence told her that Gage had made sexual advances. "Jason hit on him, and he beat him up," she said. The gay panic defense and the sorrow of a community have many in the area drawing parallels to the brutal 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard. Human Rights groups are calling for a hate crimes ordinance.

Woman granted visitation with child of former lesbian partner

Two women began a relationship in the late 1980s, and one became pregnant through artificial insemination in 1992. The two raised the girl until they separated in August 1996. A year later, a court granted custody to the birth mother and allowed visitation rights to T.B. The biological mother appealed and today a Pennsylvania state appeals court ruled that the biological mother should not be rewarded for alienating the child from her former partner. PhillyBurbs

Cynthia Nixon and Christine Marinoni celebrate Sarah Jessica Parker's 40th

nixon Cynthia Nixon and girlfriend Christine Marinoni were in attendance together at the party Matthew Broderick threw for Sarah Jessica Parker's 40th Birthday at New York City's Plaza Grand Ballroom. Nixon even sang a song at the star studded gala, "I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face," only she changed the lyrics to Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik shoes, Parker's trademark favorite shoes. Afterwards Nixon said, "Now that I've become a lesbian, I don’t wear any of those again." Page Six reports Nixon wore a green grown with diamond earrings, while Marinoni went white tie, top hat, and tails. That should make it clear who wears the pants in the family.

Albany County drops proposed transgender protections

New York: After six months of trying, Albany County legislator John Frederick withdrew a proposal to amend county law discrimination protections to include the transgendered. The measure failed to garner support.

St. Louis police shut down gay play Making Porn

renzi Former reality TV boy toy Dan Renzi said, "I just pulled on a pair of pants and ran out the back door." In St. Louis, Missouri, the actor made a quick exit when police raided "Making Porn," shutting it down shortly after it opened at SPOT. Ronnie Larsen's theater comedy about the porn industry that contains on-stage nudity allegedly broke a city ordinance even though the California-based production has been produced in numerous U.S. cities, as well as internationally. Death threats for Go West film director Ahmed Imamovic

djurkovic The director of the gay Bosnian film "Go West" has received death threats and religious groups have condemned it. Those who have actually seen the film don't even want to be identified for fear of attack. All this, and the film hasn't even been released yet. BBC News' Nick Hawton was given a preview, along with 20 of director Ahmen Imamovic's friends. The film tells the story of a gay male couple - one Muslim, one Serb - and their attempts to get out of Bosnia at the start of the war in 1992. Svetlana Djurkovic, pictured, runs Q Association, Sarajevo's first lesbian and gay activist group. "We're fully behind the film and think the director has a lot of courage to go through with it," she says.

GayPatriot leaves blogosphere after BlogActive phones his boss

lgf.gif Blogger Little Green Footballs reports that GayPatriot's conservative blog disappeared after he posted a "wanted" announcement in which he called other gay bloggers terrorists for outing closeted Republicans. One of them, Michael Rogers of BlogActive.com, upped the ante and called GayPatriot's boss and the police. Meanwhile, GayPatriot pulled down his site.

California: Some Californians are opting out of the domestic partnership registry they signed up for because it seems to offer the obligations of marriage without the benefits. Ora Prohovnick says, "We're the only people in the world who have community property but no marriage, and none of us has a clue about what it's going to mean."

USA: Gay leaders from around the country signed a letter protesting USA Next's campaign that said the AARP was for same-sex marriage. Like it's a bad thing, but we digress. They sent it to PhRMA, USA Next's big funder.
