Joao Gilberto Goncalves takes on gay marriage in Brazil

Prosecutor Joao Gilberto Goncalves, 27, was assigned by the government to a post In the backward factory town of Taubate, Brazil. Now he's doing the unthinkable, taking on Brazil's first serious effort to legalize gay marriage. The court filing seeking to legalize gay marriage has outraged the Catholic church even though Goncalves is a baptized Catholic himself with two small children. "Gays deserve equal rights, not more rights or less rights. This is something that should be discussed objectively, without interference by the church's moral standard of marriage," he said. Since joining Brazil's elite class of federal prosecutors two years ago Goncalves has no boss and can't be fired.
