Gay married couples mad over Mitt Romney's remarks

romney Married gay and lesbian couples criticized Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney's recent remarks to a group of South Carolina Republicans calling them "derogatory" and "disrespectful." Led by Julie and Hillary Goodridge, have requested a meeting to discuss his statement. "To us, it sounded as if you were using certain Massachusetts families either to garner applause or as a laugh line," said the letter. "We urge you to be more circumspect as you travel the country and remember that you represent all of the families of Massachusetts. To reduce gay families to a political talking point is not only unfair, it's mean-spirited." What did Romney say? [More]

He said that in Massachusetts, "same-sex couples are marrying. Same-sex couples are actually having children born to them. We've been asked to change their birth certificates to remove the phrase mother and father and replace it with parent A and parent B. It's not right on paper, it's not right in fact. Every child has a right to have a mother and a father." The audience applauded, and Romney then added, "From day one, I've opposed the move for same-sex marriage and its equivalent civil unions. We lost on marriage in the court and we lost on civil unions in the Legislature. But I'm convinced that when we finally hear the voices of the people in my state, we will win at the ballot box."
