Pinkie Merengue Shimmer takes on Oscar's red carpet

beyonce Palm Springs drag queen Pinkie Meringue Shimmer takes on fashion at the Academy Awards and we have to agree about Beyonce. "Beyonce was BOOTY-LICIOUS. Oh my, she looked FABULOUS. What an incredible figure and that black dress!" As for the others, "there was this girl named Catalina Mereno, with some other name in between those two that I could not spell. Anyhow, did you see her? I swear it looked like she was wearing a backpack on her walk down the red carpet. Then I looked again and it was part of the dress! I tell you some of these people do not have a mirror."

Robin Williams' gay cartoon protest at Academy Awards

robin williams Before Robin Williams presented the Best Animated Feature award at the Academy Awards last night, he paused to remove a large piece of white tape from his mouth, then proceeded to mock those who are connecting cartoon characters with pro-gay messages. "They tell me now that SpongeBob is gay. SquarePants is not gay. Tight pants maybe. SpongeBob Hot Pants? You go, girl!" We've told you about Dobson and others going after SpongeBob SquarePants claiming the character was designed "to desensitize very young children to homosexual and bisexual behavior." Williams went on to suggest suggested other cartoon characters throughout history may also have been gay. "What about Donald Duck? Sailor top, no pants. Hello?" Williams said. "Bugs Bunny. More dresses than J. Edgar Hoover at Mardi Gras. Hello?" Williams concluded.

Samantha Fox and partner Myra Stratton injured in car crash

sfox.jpg Eighties hottie Samantha Fox, who now goes by Sam, was in a car accident near Stockholm with her partner, Myra Stratton. "I'm lucky to be alive," Fox says. "The car veered out of control and flew into terrifying somersaults. We were flung around like rag dolls and lay trapped after it landed on its roof. I could smell petrol and was terrified it would explode." Firefighters pulled the women, two other passengers and the driver out of their 4x4. Fox was treated for whiplash and Stratton has a back injury. Everybody else is pretty banged up, too.

Gay married couples mad over Mitt Romney's remarks

romney Married gay and lesbian couples criticized Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney's recent remarks to a group of South Carolina Republicans calling them "derogatory" and "disrespectful." Led by Julie and Hillary Goodridge, have requested a meeting to discuss his statement. "To us, it sounded as if you were using certain Massachusetts families either to garner applause or as a laugh line," said the letter. "We urge you to be more circumspect as you travel the country and remember that you represent all of the families of Massachusetts. To reduce gay families to a political talking point is not only unfair, it's mean-spirited." What did Romney say? [More]

Dr. Who gets gay companion in John Barrowman

barrowman We've told you that the new Dr. Who is coming to the BBC, but we didn't know that John Barrowman (shown) will be playing Dr. Who's gay companion on the British television show. Written by Queer As Folk creator Russell T. Davies, the new Dr. Who will be going places the time/space travelers never went before. Barrowman came out officially a few months ago after being cast in the show and his character, Captain Jack Harkness, will make his first apearance in a World War II story in full military uniform. Barrowman, however, is apparently a time traveller though and he winds up joining Dr. Who and his other companion Rose for future adventures. The show is filming in Cardiff, Wales, and they've apparently made an impression on the local gay scene there too. Here's a preview of the brand new Dr. Who.

Small-town mom does the right thing and embraces lesbian daughter

sfuras.jpg Eva Sfura of Griffith, Indiana, feared telling her mom, Maria, that she is lesbian. What Eva didn't know was that her mother would embrace her, literally and immediately. "You gave birth to this child. God gave you this gift," Maria says. "God put children on this earth for a reason and he gives you a responsibility to raise these children and he tells you to love them the way he has loved us. Anybody that can turn their back on their child is not a parent. How can you tell someone all these years, 'I love you,' and then turn it off like an electric switch." This happy ending brought to you by Queer Day.

Dairy cows are secretly gay nymphomaniacs

cow Scientists have discovered that dairy cow herds can be intensely sexual. "Cows look calm, but really they are gay nymphomaniacs," John Webster said. The professor of animal husbandry at Bristol also claims that cows have a secret mental life in which they bear grudges, nurture friendships and become excited over intellectual challenges. They also struggle with fear, pain and anxiety, but can be incredibly happy when farmers provide the right conditions. (Thanks Tyler)

British politicians won't protect gays for fear of offending Muslims

If they're forced to choose between offending Muslims and gays, British politicians would apparently rather offend gays. The U.K. doesn't have a law protecting people from discrimination on the basis of religion or sexual orientation. But rather than pass both together, lawmakers decided to protect religion only. Downing Street fears that Muslims, whose votes could be the key to saving the seats of many Labour MPs, might feel offended if they were “lumped together” with gay people. Nice.

Gay drunk driver Daniel McMullen murdered in jail

Jail officials are investigating the death of Daniel McMullen, jailed on a drunk driving conviction last year. He fell into a coma after a fight over a deck of cards, allegedly with burglary suspect Dennis Hadley. McMullen, who was gay and arrested on his second drunk driving charge, had been moved to a new cell after complaining that other inmates were urinating on his bed. As a detainee, not an inmate, Hadley shouldn't have been in McMullen's cell to begin with, but the jail is overcrowded. The sheriff wants Hadley charged with second-degree murder.

Queer Eye for Boston Red Sox first baseman Kevin Millar

millar Kevin Millar, the scruffy first baseman for the Boston Red Sox, is going to become a project for Queer Eye's Fab Five. He is, however, setting some ground rules - like declaring that his ridiculous mullet is off limits. "They wanted to shave my head. I said no," Millar said yesterday. "I told them they could do something to my face, my toes, my nails, my wardrobe. But more so, we're going to make over the field." Millar's referring to a little league baseball field in a Florida hurricane struck community. The episode would be filmed during spring training with makeover work being done on the field and on Millar. When someone suggested the Fab Five might recommend some designer duds, Millar quipped, "I don't think I can wear Italian collared shirts on my Harley."

New Paltz gay weddings a year later

jason west A year ago New Paltz Mayor Jason West stood atop a platform in the Village Hall parking lot, with a throng of reporters and spectators looking on, and proclaimed "the flowering of the largest civil rights movement this country has seen in a generation." The legal issues - from a gay couple's right to marry to a public official's right to flout state law in deference to his own interpretation of the Constitution - appear headed to New York's highest court. Those who West married, meanwhile, remain in legal limbo with "marriage affidavits" that have helped the couples secure benefits from private employers, yet carry no real weight.

Dead man linked to gay bash killing of Robert Woodland

Something strange is going on in Adelaide, Australia. Police were looking for missing gay man Robert Woodland and several visits to his home had proven fruitless. When detectives sent a crime scene examiner to his home in search of evidence, they discovered Woodland's dead naked body on a bed. Investigators were questioning several people regarding the murder, people who were associates of Shaine Douglas Moore. Now Moore's body has been found dead in his home as well. The causes of death haven't been finalized although both have been officially listed as murders. Woodland was believed to have been gay bashed and robbed on December 5. Update: Source claims Moore was "a heavy user of intravenous amphetamines that had recently infiltrated Adelaide's gay scene."

The court filing seeking to legalize gay marriage has outraged the Catholic church even though Goncalves is a baptized Catholic himself with two small children. "Gays deserve equal rights, not more rights or less rights. This is something that should be discussed objectively, without interference by the church's moral standard of marriage," he said. Since joining Brazil's elite class of federal prosecutors two years ago Goncalves has no boss and can't be fired.

Research casts further doubt on newborn sex-assignment surgeries

Gender, often said to depend solely upon anatomy or hormones, may depend also on hard-wired genetics, according to new research that could help doctors and lawyers better understand the one in 4,000 babies born with both male and female traits. "The biology of gender is far more complicated than XX or XY chromosomes and may rely more on the brain's very early development than we ever imagined," researcher Eric Vilain, M.D., reported. "Surgical sex assignment of newborns with no capacity to consent should never be performed for cosmetic reasons, in my opinion," said Vilain.

Maine bill seeks to stop abortion of gay fetuses

duprey Conservative Representative Brian Duprey proposed a state bill in Maine that he says is about gay rights and we say his intention is otherwise. Duprey wants to forbid a woman from ending a pregnancy based on the projected sexual orientation of a fetus, assuming in the future that scientists can fine the "homosexual gene." He says, "I have heard from women who told me that if they found out that they were carrying a child with the gay gene, then they would abort. I think this is wrong." We do too, and using this argument merely as a tool to bring abortion to the table is as well. Portland Press Herald

Another lesbian - Kelli Davis - faces yearbook fight over tux photo

kdavis.jpgWe told you last year about Tampa, Florida-area student Nikki Youngblood, who sued her school district after it refused to run her yearbook photo because she wore a tuxedo. Apparently they don't read the papers at Kelli Davis' Fleming Island, Florida, school. Kelli, who is a lesbian, decided the "drape" choice for girls was too revealing, so she chose the tux instead. Not only did her school exclude her from the yearbook, but a straight friend who had hoped to be a yearbook advisor when she finished school was dismissed from the staff over rumors (untrue) that she planned to sneak Kelli's photo, shown, in anyway. Although Kelli's decision was about modesty, it would seem from school officials' sputtering remarks that her exclusion is about sexual orientation. Hundreds of people, some in tuxedos, attended a meeting to support her, but the school refused to budge.

Gay men read maps like women

brain A UK research study has revealed that gay men use the same strategies for navigating as women do - using landmarks to find their way around. But gay men also use the strategies typically used by straight men too, such as using compass directions and distances. Therefore their brains are a sexual mosaic," explains psychobiologist Qazi Rahman. "It's not simply that lesbians have men's brains and gay men have women's brains."

New legislation would repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell

Congress has announced new legislation that would repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." After yesterday's news regarding how much money the policy is costing taxpayers, The Military Readiness Enhancement Act is scheduled to be introduced in the House of Representatives by Massachusetts Representative Marty Meehan on March 2nd. Oddly enough the proposal is already supported by a bi-partisan coalition of Congressional representatives. "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," adopted by Congress in 1993, is a prohibition on lesbian, gay and bisexual service personnel. Under the law, military personnel cannot reveal their sexual orientation to anyone, including family members, without risking expulsion from the armed forces.

Jay McCarroll wins Project Runway

mccarroll While Jay McCarroll has been our Project Runway personal favorite from day one, we must admit we didn't think he'd actually wind up winning the whole thing. Throughout the entire series he didn't walk away with a single challenge, continuing to take another step forward without ever stepping clearly into the winning limelight. Last night's finale, however, truly revealed his amazing creativity and vision, something that was perhaps stifled by the show's weekly assignment and time constraints. As his models made their way down the runway audience members actually applauded several of his creations, something we didn't see happen for competitors Wendy Pepper or or Kara Saun - who cheated on the shoes. Shoes or no shoes, we clearly had McCarroll ranked first and we're thrilled the judges agreed with us.

Although Scarlett was asked to present a collection, it was never intended for inclusion in the series and he was given only a month to complete it, leaving him feeling a little like Cinderella. mcgee Wisconsin Senator Tim Carpenter confronted Milwaukee Alderman Michael McGee (shown) at City Hall over homophobic comments McGee made during a police department racial injustice protest earlier this month. McGee was holding a press conference to criticize Mayor Tom Barrett when Carpenter confronted him. "Shouldn't you stand against discrimination, alderman?" Carpenter said. McGee did not apologize.

The majority of Indiana high school counselors admit they are not very well trained when it comes to helping students who may need them the most - gay and lesbian students. A Ball State study shows counselors are looking for guidance.

After all of the fuss, White County School Superintendent Dr. Paul Shaw said the proposed Gay Straight Alliance is planning to withdraw its current applicationM. Shaw said he's been talking with club sponsor Kelly Williams and the group has decided to submit the necessary paperwork for a "broad-based tolerance group" instead of a GSA.

Curbing anti-gay harassment in Phoenix schools and expanding outreach to gay students emerged as the chief concerns during a meeting between Mayor Phil Gordon and members of the gay and lesbian community. "I'm working toward everybody being treated equally, and you foster tolerance when everyone backs projects that benefit the community at large," said Gordon.

Australia: Australian Archbishop of Sydney Dr. Peter Jensen says that a possible split in the Anglican Church over gay priests and same-sex marriages is putting the authority of the Bible at risk. "The idea that we break from one another is a painful one, and very, very sorrowful."

Massachusetts Supremes to hear 1913 law challenge

court Massachusetts' Supreme Judicial Court agreed in late January to hear a challenge to the 1913 law being used to bar out-of-state gay couples from getting married in the state, but no announcement was made until today. It seems that oral arguments on the 1913 law are tentatively scheduled for September, said Joan Kenney, a spokeswoman for the court. "We're optimistic about our chances because the court has already decided the commonwealth can't deny marriage rights to gays and lesbians," said attorney Michele Granda, who is representing eight couples challenging the law.

Sandra Bernhard takes on Oscar, The L Word and more

sandra bernhard Sandra Bernhard will be doing something special on the WE Channel on Oscar night, according to Liz Smith. As soon as ABC, which airs the Oscars, goes to commercial, Sandra will pop up on WE "opining on the gowns, hair, attitudes, winner, losers, and what's really going on." The bisexual diva kabbalist Sandra promises to be frank, but "classy, not mean." She's actually very busy these days with her recurring role as Detective Roz Framus on "Crossing Jordan." [more]

eHarmony.com linked to conservative religious agenda

nwarren.jpg Naturally, we much prefer Queer Day Personals, but perhaps those of you who've explored eHarmony.com have wondered why there is no same-sex section. AlterNet points out that eHarmony founder Dr. Neil Clark Warren is a frequent guest on conservative Christian TV shows such as Pat Robertson's 700 Club, and writes for Focus on the Family's magazine. Warren's wife and eHarmony spokeswoman Marylyn Warren says "eHarmony is meant for everybody. We do not discriminate in any way." Except against you. "It's nothing against it," she adds. "We just don't want to be involved in something we don't know anything about. Our goal is to create good heterosexual families, I guess." Bertie has some additional insights, including how completely overt it all really is. We think we just threw up in our mouth a little.

Michael Musto and RuPaul do porn

musto Michael Musto (shown) is appearing in porn, and we're admittedly grateful that he's keeping his clothes on. He just shot a cameo in Michael Lucas's dirty version of "Dangerous Liaisons" along with other non-sexual guest stars RuPaul, who joked that his role was "the cum dumpster. Chug-a-lug," and Amanda Lepore. Queer Day contributor Lady Bunny appears too well and she did a good job of keeping everything in good working order - "All right, I want those cocks out and I want them hard!" Fleshbot has photos too.

But wait, there's more! Archives
