Netherlands queers publish booklet on winning legal recognition of same-sex marriage
In response to a recent Vatican pronouncement, gay rights organizations in the Netherlands have published a guide offering advice on campaigning for same sex-marriages and explaining how the Netherlands became the first country in the world to legally recognize such unions. In July, the Vatican called on Catholic and non-Catholic legislators around the world to oppose legal recognition of marriages between same-sex couples. The Catholic Church in the Netherlands has refused to comment on the booklet until after a s' conference next week. But Cathleen Ferrier, a legislator in the senior coalition Christian Democrats, says, "We are independent representatives of the people of this country in which there is a law which makes it possible for people of the same sex to get married."
