Defining the 'gay sensibility'

In honor of Gay Pride, a number of artists were asked to define "the gay sensibility," how it influences their work, if it does, and what effect they see it having on the broader U.S. culture. Chicago playwright Claudia Allen says she sees a lot of what she sees as the gay sensibility coming from straight students, particularly a willingness to be open to difference, including variations in gender expression. Broadway leading man Howard McGillin notices the changes in himself and the culture in retrospect. "When I catch myself in reruns on late-night TV, I see a really scared guy trying to be something he's not." Reuters
